2000 - 2009 Chevrolet Impala
Today we are going to be installing hitch part number 36407 on a 2007 Chevy Impala. The first step in our installation is going to be to lower the exhaust and you can see here on the passenger side there is 2 bolts holding the hanger into place. We want to go ahead and remove those hangers. As you can see, we have the same thing on the driver side here, 2 bolts that need to be removed. To further gain access to the frame we want to go ahead and lower off the 3rd hanger also. That one is just on a rubber piece so we will just pry that off. After we take the 3rd tab out of the 3rd hanger here we want to make sure that we support the exhaust system from when we remove it because it will fall to the ground and that could damage your exhaust. So what we will do is apply a tow strap around the exhaust itself here and then pull it tight. Then go ahead and remove the exhaust off the hanger here.
Now with the exhaust lowered we are going to look at the passenger side frame rail here. You can see above the exhaust here there are 2 existing holes. We will be using those for the attachment points on the hitch on the frame and we will put the hardware up and through this hole here and drop it down in through these holes. Then here on the cross member here, right on the rear side of the spare tire well, there are existing holes here and here as well. Which we will also use as attaching points. Then we are going to feed the hardware into the cross member through these large holes at the end of each side of the frame rail. I am going to be using the accessory part that we offer, it is called the bolt leader. That is going to allow you to feed the block and bolt assembly through the frame into position. What we want to do is feed it up through the hole that we are going to be using and then back out the access hole. Then we want to feed the bolt leader into the block. Then wrap the threads of the bolt with the bolt leader and that will allow us to pull it through the frame here. You want to make sure the 4 attaching points that are mounted to the frame itself you want to use the 4 shorter bolts that are provided with the kit. The 2 longer ones will go into the cross member. We want to go ahead and repeat that for the driver side as well.
Okay with the bolts pulled down through the frame here, we can go ahead and put the hitch up into position. The instructions say to go ahead and put the bolts into the cross member first and then put the hitch up. But putting the hitch up before you put the bolts in the cross member will make it a less likely chance that you will push the bolts back up into the frame while installing the hitch. I am going to go ahead and do that and install the bolts into the hitch after it is mounted up to the frame work. We still need to be very careful not to push the bolts back up into the frame. Now that we have the hitch back up into position we want to leave the bolts that are not in the hitch to the side of the frame, loosely installed. Then we are going to go ahead and attach the bolts in through the cross member here.
Again we are going to use the bolt leader that we had used previously. Feed it up and through the hole. Then back out through the access hole. With all attachments up into place we can go ahead and tighten the bolts down. Now we are going to torque the bolts down now and we want all the bolts to get torqued to 75 foot pounds. We will torque the ones on the bottom first. You may need to use a tow strap or something to pull the exhaust up and out of your way. To gain it more access even an extra set of hands someone can hold it out of the way for you. We are going to use a deep well 7/8 socket so that we can get some extra clearance here. We will want to repeat that for the other side. With all the bolts torqued down we are going to go ahead and put our exhaust back up into place. With the exhaust put back up into position our installation is complete. This will conclude the installation of part number 36407 on a 2007 Chevy Impala.
