Today on this 2006 Subaru Outback Wagon we will be installing Hidden Hitch part number 87446. This installation will also apply to the Draw-Tite hitch part number 75560. We are underneath the vehicle and the first thing we want to do before we point out the mounting location for the trailer hitch is to lower both the driver and passenger sides exhaust down so we can gain access to the frame rail. There are four hangers, two per side, that we are going to need to lower the exhaust off of. To ease in the removal of the rubber hangers I am going to spray down the studs with WD-40. With the exhaust hanging off its hangers, looking at the driver side frame rail, for clarity I have removed the fastener for the rear most attaching point. There will be a bolt in place but that is going to refine our rear most attaching point at the weld nut and then the forward one will actually have a plug in in this well which I have already removed. 00:56
This will be the forward attaching point, that is going to be the same on the passenger side as well. There is also a center attaching point at the tow loop at the bottom of the of the spare tire well. I do want to note also that with attaching points at the rear one you have got a large bracket that you are going to be going over and this forward one is going to be flat against the frame. So we are going to need to put some blocks in there to make sure that the hitch is even. That is going to vary from vehicle to vehicle how many blocks you may need if you need any at all. What I recommend is put the hitch up in position attaching it to the center tow loop first and then we can level out the hitch at the frame and see how many spacers we need. It looked at the rear attaching points, I am not going to need to use any, however I may need to use one in between the frame and the hitch at the forward most attaching points on the frame. 01:45
Then we can fasten the hitch to the frame using the 10 millimeter bolt along with the conical tooth washers. Now that we have got all the bolts in place we can torque them down. We want to torque the frame bolts first and then we will come back to the center tow loop bolt last. With all the bolts torqued down we want to put the exhaust back up on its hangers and our installation will be complete. Now that we have got our hitch installed we need to do a couple of the final installed dimensions. From the ground to the top of the receiver tube opening is going to measure 12-3/ 4 inches and from the center of the pin hole out to the clear the rear edge of your bumper is going to be approximately seven inches. That will conclude the installation of Hidden Hitch part number 87446 on a 2006 Subaru Outback Wagon.
