Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2006 Ford Taurus
Today on this 2006 Ford Taurus we are going to install a hitch, part number 36313 from Draw-Tite. This will also going to apply to part number 90309 from Hidden Hitch. What we are going to do is actually take down the tie down brackets here on the bumper. We will go ahead and lower our exhaust now, to get a little more working room. We will spray down the rubber hangers and then just push them off. Next thing I am gong to do is take down the carbon canister here. We have to disconnect the electrical plug right here. And also disconnect the vapor hose right here.
Sometimes there is a clamp on here, you can take a pair of pliers and squeeze it, but this one apparently does not have one. So we can just simply pull it off and then we will just lower the canister by the four bolts that hold it in place. Lets go ahead and work it off, we basically need to get it out of the way for a little bit. We cannot completely disconnect the whole thing, just get enough working room is all we need. At this point we can actually see now where the hitch will actually attach to the vehicle. And then also it is going to attach to where this bolt is right here, our energy absorber. The hitch will install on the frame using this hole right here. And on the drivers side it will be the last hole in the frame towards the front. We will go ahead and start taking off the bolts for the energy absorber here, there is going to be one on each side.
At this point we can go ahead and start installing the hitch. We will install the hitch using new fasteners supplied with the kit and we will go ahead and hang the hitch by the bolts and nuts that we just removed the bolts from. We have our bolts started but we are not going to tighten them down because we still need room to move the hitch a little bit. We will go ahead and install our hardware for the frame now. What we are going to do is install a block which is going to sit inside the frame like this, and it is so close to the extra holes we can push it down with our fingers to get it into the right spot. All right next we will go ahead and install our handle nut which is going to go through here. You will have to bend it just a little bit to match the top of the hole, and we can install our bolt. On this side what we need to do is enlarge this hole a little bit by sticking the handle end of a breaker bar to pry it. Just kind of pull down a little bit, you can distort the metal a little bit just enough to get both pieces inside and to hold it together just use some electric tape. We have some electric tape around the ends of the block and the handle nut. Work it in, and again I am going to leave that loose.
And we can start snugging down the bolts that are back up on the energy absorbers. All right now we can start snugging down the bolts that go through the frame and then we will start torquing down the bolts to their proper specifications. All right once our bolts are all torqued down we can start putting the exhaust back into place along with the carbon canister. And our hose gets routed through the hitch and back into the carbon canister too. And there you have it for part number 36313 from Draw-Tite.
