Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2005 Volkswagen New Body Style Jetta TDI

Today on this 2005 Volkswagen Jetta TDI we are going to install part number V58780 from Valley. We will start with what components need to come down first. This plastic shield right here gets taken off and stays off. Next we will go ahead and remove these two main screws underneath the fascia. Next we will undo two bolts that will lower the exhaust. Next thing we are going to do is remove this bolt above the exhaust tube, this is actually one of the mounting points for the hitch right here.

On the passenger side the hitch will use these two existing holes right here. And on the bottom of the trunk pan there is a mount to, and it is going to go in this spot here where this rubber plug is. We are using a wobble socket end on it so it will help us out by getting around the plastic here. Back on the passengers side here we will go ahead and install the hardware for the hitch inside the frame itself and we will install the 7/16ths carriage bolt, we will have to fish wire them in though this access hole here. We will run our fish wire tool, which is included in the kit to our access hole. Then we will push our plate into position onto the wire, push it in, and we will thread our bolts in, put it inside the frame also and pull it all the way out.

At this point we will go ahead and start putting the hitch in position. It is kind of an awkward deal so we are going to need an extra set of hands to help hold up one side. What you want to do is pull this panel down a little bit, work the hitch up over the bracket, and then go to the other side here. We will do the bolt on the drivers side first. All right with our hitch hanging by the bolt on the drivers side we are going to let the hitch hand down a little bit. We will go ahead and reinstall our fasteners for the bumper fascia. Our last fastener on the drivers side is kind of pushed out of the way right now by the hitch. Lets go ahead and put the hitch back into position and then we will come back and put our bolts in here. Then we can start getting inside the trunk pan and take out the spare tire so we can do our last fastener. Now we are inside the trunk pan area, we took out the covers and the spare tire, as you can see we are down to the bare trunk pan.

This is the rubber grommet we need to take out right here. You can see where our hitch is. Lets go ahead and in our hardware, this will be the block and the 1/ 2 inch carriage bolt. We will tighten it up and apply some sealant to the sides to keep the outside air from coming in. We will go ahead and install the hardware on the bottom now. The lock washer and the nut. Now that we have everything started we can go ahead and snug down all the bolts. First off we will tighten up the bolts on the drivers side above the exhaust. Now that everything is started we can go ahead and torque down all the bolts as specified in the instructions. We can go ahead and reinstall our muffler bracket now. Next we will go back into the trunk pan area and we will go ahead and apply some sealant around the edges here. That will finish our install of part number V58780 from Valley.
