Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

Today we are going to be installing hitch part number 11070 from Curt on a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta. We are underneath the vehicle now and we are going to go ahead and point out the mounting locations for the trailer hitch. Here on the passengers side, you can see we have got a tow loop. And we have got one hole here, and on some models you will have the second hole here as well. We are going to use these as two attaching points for the hitch on the passengers side. And then, over here on the drivers side, we are going to be drilling four holes into the side of the spare tire well. So the first thing you want to do is to remove any components that you may have in the spare tire well. And then we will come back down here, and we will put the hitch up over the passengers side and then drill our holes. Over here on the drivers side, before we get going I am going to go ahead and lower the exhaust down to gain more room to drill my holes in the side of the trunk well. You can see we have got one large hanger here. We just need to take this stud off of the rubber portion. To do this, I am going to use a little spray lubricant, like a WD-40. And I am also going to lower the one here at the forward side by doing the same thing.

OK, we are going to go ahead and put the hitch up into position now. And again, I am going to start by mounting at the rearmost hole, using the 1/2-inch bolt and the handle nut. We are just going to take the handle nut and slide it through the opening at the top, feed the hex bolt up and through there and just tighten them together. Then what we can do with that fastener in place is go ahead and center the hitch up and make sure it is nice and straight. And then we can go ahead and mark out the other holes that need to be drilled. Then we will pull the hitch down and drill those out and put the hitch back up into position. OK, now that we have got the holes drilled here in the side of the spare tire well, I am going to come inside and put our hardware through, and then we can go back outside and remount our hitch.

And then we just want to add the 3/8 nut onto the bolts here. We are just going to leave those just hand tightened for the time being, until we get the other fasteners in over here on the passengers side. I just want to realign the handle nut again, and then we will come back through and drill out our hole here at the bottom side. OK, and with that hole drilled, you can see I went ahead and ped the hardware down and through. We just want to add the 3/8 nut down here at the bottom of the hitch. OK, now we can go back through and torque all the bolts down. I am going to start by doing the ones here on the drivers side, on the side of the spare tire well, and we will come back and torque those last. OK, and with all the bolts torqued down, our installation is complete. You want to make sure you put your exhaust back up on its hanger if you had removed them earlier. And this will conclude the installation of hitch part number 11070 on a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta.
