Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2000 Jeep Wrangler

Today we are going to be installing hitch part number 13408 from Curt on a 2000 Jeep Wrangler. OK, we are underneath the vehicle now and we are going to go ahead and point out the attaching points for the hitch. Looking at the drivers side frame rail, you can see there is an existing bolt. that is in the frame. There is one on each side We are going to go ahead and remove that, and that is going to provide the rearmost attaching point for the hitch. And you can see also there are two holes existing in the more forward side of the frame. The larger of the two is the one that we are going to use as the forwardmost attaching point for the hitch.

So, the first thing we are going to do is to go ahead and remove the bolts from the end of the frame. And then we are going to go ahead and fish our block and carriage bolt up through this hole and back down into place, so that can provide our forwardmost attaching point. OK, I am going to go ahead and fish the bolts into the frame here for this forwardmost attaching point. I am going to go ahead and use the block with the square hole in it and the carriage bolt, as well. We are also going to use the fish wire that was provided with the installation kit. What we are going to do is feed the fish wire through the opening in the block and then wrap the threads of the bolt. We will go ahead and feed the bolt into the hole. This will be the same attaching hole that we are going to be using. Put the block up into the frame and then we will pull it back down. And that sets it into position for us.

We are going to go ahead and do that for the other side as well. All right, with the carriage bolts into position, we are going to go ahead and remove the bolts from the end of the frame. With the bolts removed from the frame we can go ahead and put he hitch up into position. We are going to go ahead and attach it by the carriage bolts that we put in previously, and then we will go ahead and thread in the new hardware into the weld nuts at the end of the frame. OK, and then we are going to go ahead and thread the new hardware into the existing weld nuts at the end of the frame. You will note that in the hardware kit, they actually provide two different size bolts that are possible for this existing weld nut. So you want to go ahead and compare the one that you removed from the frame earlier to figure out which bolt you need to put into the weld nut there. And we want to just add the conical-tooth washer to it and thread it into the weld nut. And we want to go ahead and do that for both sides.

OK, then we want to just go ahead and tighten the bolts down. And then we want to come back through and torque the bolts down. You want to check your instructions to verify the appropriate torque rating for each individual bolt. OK, and with the bolts torqued down, our installation is complete. This will conclude the installation of hitch part number 13408 on a 2000 Jeep Wrangler.
