Ford F-150 Trailer Hitch

Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2000 Ford F-150

Today we are going to be installing Hidden Hitch part number 87183 on a 2000 Ford F-150. This installation will also apply to Draw-Tite part number 75065. We are underneath the vehicle. We are going to go ahead and point out the mounting locations for the trailer hitch. We are looking at the driver side frame rail. You can see the wires for the existing 4-pole are in the way here so we want to make sure that when we put the hitch up, we pull those up and out of the way. Right above those wires would be the two existing holes here at the end of the frame rail. Those will provide the two rear most attaching points for the trailer hitch. And then we are going to be using first the two holes here forward on the frame rail that will provide a third attaching point.

Those will be the same for the passenger side as well. At each of those attaching points we are going to be using a carriage bolt and block. And what we will do is just put those two together like so and them down through the top of the frame. I do want to make note again before I put the bolt in here on the passenger side. Some of the newer models may have a layer of film for undercoating here at the bottom of the frame rail on both sides. If your model has that, you want to scrape that out of there before you get started because we want it to actually touch directly to the bottom of the frame metal once we get the hitch up into place.

Because this mount does not have it any longer, we do not have to worry about that. And with bolts into place we can go ahead and put the hitch up into position. We are going to be attaching each one of those bolts with a conical tooth washer. Now that we have got the hitch up into place, you can go ahead and torque the bolts down. You want to check with the directions to verify the appropriate torque rating for each individual bolt. And with all of the bolts torqued down, the installation is complete. This will conclude the installation of Hidden Hitch part number 87183 on a 2000 Ford F-150.
