Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Today we are going to be installing hitch part number 70594 from Hidden Hitch on a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. We are underneath the vehicle now, and we are going to go ahead and point out the mounting holes for the trailer hitch. Looking here at the passengers side frame rail, you can see we have got two existing bolts here. We are going to be removing those two. And the third one, which is a little more hidden, is going to provide the rearmost attaching point for the hitch. Yours may or may not have a bolt in this location. If it does, you are going to need to remove as well. As you can see, in this particular model the weld nut is extremely corroded, so we are going to need to clean that out thoroughly before we get started. What I am going to use is just a regular spray lubricant, like a WD-40, and just soak that up pretty good. You can also use a basic battery terminal cleaner. You can pick them up at any local auto parts store. It has got a nice, thick, wire brush that we can use to put up into the weld nut that will allow us to clean it out thoroughly, get all the road grime and rust out of there. And I have found that this works as well as anything to get the corrosion and stuff out of there. Then, over here on the drivers side, we are going to be using the same attaching points. As you can see, on this particular model we have got a factory-installed tow hook and also a mounting bracket that is going to need to come down first before we can install the hitch as well.

OK, with all the fasteners removed and the weld nuts thoroughly cleansed out, we can go ahead and put the hitch up into position. Again, we want to remember to use the new hardware at the forwardmost attaching point. We also want to make sure that at the rearmost attaching point we place the spacer in between the hitch and the frame when we put the hardware up into place. OK, I want to go ahead and note here that while I am tightening up the bolts, that you will find that it is going to be pretty difficult to get into the middle and the rearmost attaching points to get the bolts tightened down. I would recommend the use of what we call a swivel adapter. And what it is is it just allows you to rotate the socket in multiple positions. It can make life a lot easier on you when you go to tighten them down. OK, with that said, I can go ahead and torque my bolts down now. You want to check with your instructions to verify the appropriate torque rating for each individual bolt. And this will conclude the installation of hitch part number 70594 on a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
