Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 1993 Chevy Geo Prism

Today we are going to be installing part number 24579 from Draw Tite. We are going to install this on a 1993 Geo Prism. The hitch installs in these 3 points on the side of the frame. And on this vehicle we actually have a threaded fittings. Some varieties of this vehicle will not have threads at all. In fact, we would have to drill a hole into the frame to install hardware. In this case we do not have to do that because the 3 holes here are threaded. Also when you install the hitch we will have to make a notch in the sheet metal here to put it in place. We can do that with a simple set of sheers. It will not be too hard to install. Basically you will do the same thing on both sides. The firsts steps involve is to go ahead and take down these bumper straps off the trunk pan here. We will just go ahead and take those off. We just need to pull those out of our way for now. Next what we will do is hold up the hitch and find out where exactly on the sheet metal we need to cut.

You can tell by where the hitch goes up beside the frame, there is a little bit left and right movement so we will just mark off enough area to trim off of. So we have plenty of adjustment. We will take a regular set of tin snips and cut this as close as we can to the edge of the frame here. Go a little bit over an inch. We can simply just push this out of the way. Do the same thing on both sides. Put the hitch up into the vehicle and what we need to do is this strap here actually gets pushed up and out of the way and stays just like that. When we are done this strap actually will go below the hitch and get bolted back into place. Now we just got 2 bolts holding it in place. We will install the rest of the hardware and put it up in the final position. Once we have all our hardware installed we can go ahead and tighten them all down. At this point we have our bolts snugged down we can go ahead and give them their final torque.

Next we need to reinstall this strap right here and, depending on your plastic, you might have to stretch it out a little bit. Then the other bolt we took out we can go ahead and reinstall right here. That will prevent dirt, gas and fumes from getting into the trunk area. If you notice here, the bumper cover is deflected a little bit. It is kind of the way it has to be for it to fit the hitch up here, but it is on the very bottom so you can not see it anyway. That covers our install of part number 24579 from Draw-Tite on our 1993 Geo Prism.
