Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 1991 Jeep Cherokee

Today on this 1991 Jeep Cherokee we will be installing Draw-Tite hitch part number 75054. This installation will also apply to Hidden Hitch part number 87591. Okay we are underneath the vehicle and the first thing we want to do is to figure out the configuration of the frame that you might have. The Cherokees have five different frame options. So you need to figure that out before we get started. The holes that we are going to be using here, this one, this one, this one, and this one. And those will be our four attaching points for the trailer hitch. And it will be the same here on the passenger side as well. You can see we have got the exhaust over here, but the hitch will go up and around that.

Before we get started we are going to go ahead and fish the bolts into the end of the frame here down into place. Starting over here on the drivers side where the forward most hole is located, we are going to be setting it up like so inside the frame. The middle block will offset the hole this way. For the next hole we will be using the block like so. So to fish those into place we are going to be using the bolt leader that is provided with our installation kit. We are going to take and simply feed the bolt leader through the hole that we are going to be attaching to. Then we will simply feed the block onto the bolt leader followed by the carriage bolt which will wrap the bolt leader the threads.

Then we will go ahead and pull those into the hole and through the frame. And we will just pull that down into place. For this one I can actually go ahead and just feed the block in independently of the bolt leader. And that will help to keep lined up the way you want it inside the frame. Just take a flathead screw driver and push it in place. Then we will go ahead and put the hitch up into position now. We are going to be attaching each one of these hex bolts using the conical tooth washer and hex bolt. At the rear most attaching point we are actually going to be using the handle nut to attach to a hex bolt. See we also want to make sure we use the lock washer here, and once we have it started we can go ahead and push the handle nut up and out of the way here. We can go ahead and go through and torque the bolts down now. You want to check with the directions to verify the appropriate torque rating for each individual bolt. And with the bolts torqued down that will conclude the installation of hitch part number 75054 on a 1991 Jeep Cherokee.
