Review of the Swagman Bike Carrier
Today we are going to show you part number S64910 from Swagman. What we have here is their three bike bicycle rack that is designed exclusively for a two inch receiver hitch. We will show you the features of this bicycle rack starting from the bottom and we will work our way up. The first of is where it inserts into the hitch. It is kind of nice that it has actually two positions to choose from and we will show you how that works. As you can see here, we have it pretty close to the bumper and we can actually take out the pin and pull it out an additional three inches to give a little bit of extra clearance if you need it. And going on to here, this particular joint is a non-tilting unit which is nice because you can actually use this unit on the back of fifth wheel trailers or RVs. With most other bicycle racks you really are not supposed to do that, especially with the tilting models. But with the three bike rack you can do that, four and five you can not do, but the three bike you can. You also want to maintain a minimum ground clearance on the bicycle rack from the ground a minimum of 15 inches.
We will show you the cradles, they are pretty nice and easy to use too. What is nice about these is they actually have a rubber liner on the inside here. And what is nice, it actually has these grooves in here where the cables on your bike will actually lay in here and not get mashed up against your bike. While we have this apart we will show you that the cradle is held in by this U-bolt right here with these two nuts. What is nice about this is you can actually take the cradle and rock it back and forth to match the tilt of your bike, especially if you have an alternative frame bike you can match the slope of it and you will not need an alternative frame bike adapter. As you can see, we have this one tilted to match the alternative frame bicycle. What is nice about the knob on the end unit in particular is the locking unit. What it does is you can turn this key and one way it allows it to free wheel so you can not take it off, then we unlock it and it will catch on the nut inside and you can take it and loosen it up.
What is nice about this having the one locking knob is that one lock locks up all three bikes. This is because once you have this one locked up you can not pull of the other two bikes. At this point, we will go ahead and show you a typical application of a couple of bikes on this rack. There are actually three slots for the lid depending on the size bike you have. Then you just spin your knob back and there you have it. Now we will go ahead and install a bike with an alternative frame with the cross tube pointed down a little bit. There you have it, an alternative bike installed without the alternative frame bike adapter bar. As you can see here, we have this cradle tilted but you can also move these cradles in and out as needed. You can see we have a sizable distance between these two here and a minimal distance on this one. You can vary these depending on the spacing that is required for your bicycles. There you have it for part number S64910 from Swagman.
