Custom Fit Fifth Wheel Hitch

Review of the Reese Fifth Wheel 20K Select Plus

The 20K Select Plus uses the regular traditional 30035 rail system. It basically is an above bed rail system, that can be used with the universal bracket mounting kits. Or, it can also be upgraded and used with our custom install bracket kits. The round tube slider will also adapt right into those rail kits30035 and pin right in, so it is pretty basic. A lot of the times when you see this 20K Select Plus used as an upgrade, the customer comes in and they have upgraded their travel trailer to a heavier weight capacity. They already have in the bed rails in their truck, they just need to get a little bit more weight capacity out of their hitch. That is where the 20K Select Plus comes in. They may be upgrading from a 16,000 pound hitch up to the 18,000 pound hitch. It will simply adapt right into the rail systems they already have for the 16K Plus.

The 20K Select Plus is featured today on our round tube slider. We are going to show the functionality of the round tube slider. What you want to do is this travels 12 inches back on the round rail here, or round tube I should say. The idea of that is in the short bed truck, a 6 foot or 6-1/2 foot bed truck, you are going to want to move your fifth wheel trailer 12 inches away from the back of the cab of your truck to prevent hitting in tight turns. That is typically done in camp grounds where you have to make these tight turns and have to go backwards. The round tooth slider features a pull pin, this is a safety pin that prevents it, when in the towing position, from moving backwards 12 inches on the rail. So we are going to pull the pin before we maneuver it, we are going to put the handle up to the maneuvering position, and slide the fifth wheel hitch back to the maneuvering position. This is when you would go through the camp ground, maneuver all of those tight turns and get backed into your camp sight. So to put it back into the tow position, you simply move the handle into the maneuvering position, slide the hitch back, and it locks back into the towing position when you are ready to tow again.

The 20K Select Plus offers you 14-18 inches of height adjustment. This comes in handy when you are looking for a minimum of 6 inches of clearance between the fifth wheel trailer and the bed rails of your truck. So this allows you to make sure you have that 6 inch clearance. The 18K Select Plus also features this pin indicator. The idea of the pin indicator is that it is a safety feature built right in. When you king pin comes in, and engages this king pin indicator, it moves a flag out of the way on the handle. This allows you to lock the handle out. So when the king pin comes into the jaw mechanism and it hits that pin indicator, it will actually move this flag out of the way and allow me to lock out the handle. If you did not hitch correctly, the flag will not move out of the way and I cannot lock this handle out. This indicates that you are not hitched correctly and you need to go through the process of hitching up your fifth wheel trailer again. Until this flag moves out of the way properly, and I can drop the pin all the way through, and lock the handle out. That locks your jaw securely into place, holding the king pin of your fifth wheel trailer for a nice secure ride.

Another featured benefit of the 20K Select Plus head is that there are torsion springs that always keep the head in the hitch up position. So in other words, these springs are always going to want to force this head forward. That is a nice feature and benefit for the customer. On some other models they do not have those springs and as they are backing up to their trailer there is the occasion where the head will flop backwards. So those springs will always keep it up in the hitch up position. We are going to unpin the hitch head, and the feature and benefit of unpinning the 20K Select Plus head is that when the customer wants to take the fifth wheel out of their truck, they can simply remove it piece by piece. In this case we are going to remove the head, which weighs 39 pounds and that will get the weight down another 39 pounds. So there are those torsion springs I was talking about that will always keep it in the hitch up position. One other feature benefit that I also want to talk about is the sight that is cut into the back of the head. That allows you to line up with the sight with your king pin on your fifth wheel trailer so when your backing in it aides in hitching up.
