Review of a Yakima King Cobra Roof Mounted Bike Rack

Today we are going to cover part number Y02084 from Yakima. This is Yakimas King Cobra bicycle rack. And what this bicycle rack does is, it mounts to the roof rack of your vehicle and this will fit both round bar and square bar roof racks. And one of the best parts about this design here is it does not require you to take off the front wheel of your bicycle. This is the type for BMX bikes or cruiser bikes that do not have a quick-release skewer. This will fit 20-inch wheels, all the way up to 29-inch mountain bike wheels, and 700c road wheels, too. And you do not have to worry about disc brakes or thru axles or funny suspension bikes, too. We will go ahead and cover the parts in more detail and give you a better idea of how it works.

First off, we will show you how it actually holds the bike in position. This part here where the front wheel goes into, you simply fold that out. And then what happens next is, you actually roll the front wheel of your bicycle onto the tray here and that actually flips up into position. And you actually make your final tightening adjustment with this knob right here in the front. Pull the knob out and then you can go ahead and wheel your bike into it. And on the bottom it actually catches. Once you have the bike in position, you tighten it up to its final torque just by spinning this knob right here. Once you have your bike loaded, just slide your strap back in. Pull it through, and you can tighten it up a little bit more with the ratchet action. We will go ahead and install this on a typical roof rack and give you a little bit better idea of how it works.

First off, what we have got to do is install the mounting clips onto our crossbars. And again, these crossbar clips will mount onto a square or round roof bar. We are actually using a Yakima brand round roof bars. Let us go ahead and install our bicycle rack. We will start off with the carriage bolts installed in the front and in the bottom of the track. And just line up the bolts - just get one of them for now, and then get the back one. And then run them into the clamps, and then we will fix the final one up front. Get your bolts all seated in there, and then go ahead and install the tie-down knobs. Put that on the back clamp. Now take a second to get everything in a straight line with the car. And when you have it the way you want it, go ahead and fully tighten down the knobs. All right, at this point we can unfold the bike rack and get ready to load up a bike.

First off, you want to make sure which tire wheel you want to use. We will unclip it here. This part that grabs the tire slides up and down. You can see the different tire sizes marked on the rack itself. There is also one for a 20-inch. And our bicycle is going to be a 26-inch, so we are going to slide it over to that. And the cover itself will actually cover up the number we are going to use. Flip it all the way forward, and then we are going to get this knob loose a little bit, just like so. And when we put our bike on there this whole thing is going to tilt forward into the other half of the rack. Also, as a side note, this bicycle rack works best with mountain-bike-style tires. Put your wheel on the front, and the back wheel on the back edge of it. All right, you have got your front wheel on the rail here. Go ahead and push it forward. You can see how it grips the wheel. All right, once you have it all the way forward, take the bar and push it back a little bit and you will hear a click. And then it will stay up into position. And you will see like a little gap right here. Once you see this gap and it stays up, then you know you have it into position. Then you take this knob, the red knob, and then just tighten it up and that gives the final gripping force on the wheel itself. As it pulls down, this bar compresses against the tire, which pushes against that bar. Tighten it down as best you can. All right, then go back to your rear clamp. It is a simple strap. Just pull it through the spokes, push it through the buckle here, and push it all the way down. It has a ratchet action to it, so give it one little click and you will be tight enough and ready to go.

And with your bike loaded up, you can go ahead and lock it there, too. The built-in cable is stored right here, and you can just wrap it around the frame and lock it back onto itself, like so. The cable does not come with a lock itself, but it does have provision for Yakimas SKS - Same Key System - which you can add a lock core, which is sold separately. All right, and that covers it for part number Y02084 from Yakima, the King Cobra Bicycle Rack.
