Yakima HoldUp 2 Bike Rack Review

Review of a Yakima HoldUp 2 Bike Rack

This is the HoldUp, part number Y02419, from Yakima. This is their hitch-mounted bicycle rack that holds two bicycles by the wheels. We will cover some of the main features about this bicycle rack. First off, this does fit only a 2-inch receiver hitch. This also has a tilt feature so you can fold it up while it is on the vehicle while you are riding your bike. And it also has a nice, compact design. You do not have to worry about bars sliding in or out because the wheel mounts are stationary, but they do tilt from left to right to accommodate a variety of different bicycle lengths. And also it comes with the built-in security feature of a cable that wraps around the bicycles rack itself and around your frames, and it has an attachment point to the actual bicycle rack itself. This will actually fit virtually any bike out there because it does not grab the bikes by their top tube, or anything like that. Basically, it just has one clamp that goes over the top tube. You do not have to worry about the bike being level, or anything like that, because it holds the bicycles by the wheels. All right, let us go ahead and install this on a typical 2-inch receiver hitch and give you an idea of how it works.

The best way to install this bicycle rack is to have it in its folded-up position. Let us go ahead and install it in the hitch. Just slide it in and line up the hitch holes. When you have the holes lined up, go ahead and install your anti-rattle hitch bolt. This also does come with a tool to help you assemble the bicycle rack and tighten it down to the hitch. However, it might be easier to go ahead and get you an appropriate-size socket and a ratchet to help tighten it down and make things go a little bit faster. If you use a ratchet, you need a 15/16 socket. Once you have the bolt tightened down, then go ahead and install the safety pin clip on the other side of the bolt.

Next, we will show you the tilt feature of this bicycle rack. What you want to do is pull the safety pin on the other side of this knob here. Pull out the pin and lower it into position, and then reinstall the pin. Now the bicycle rack is tilted down. Now we need to unfold it to accept the bicycles. And it is really easy. First you want to go ahead on the latch here that holds the bike down, go ahead and loosen it and you just go ahead and put it up or down out of your way. Then tilt this wheel mount backward a little bit. That allows the front wheel mount to get unfolded. We will show you on this one over here.

We will show you some details about the cradles here. First off, this cradle that holds the back wheel does tilt back and forth. That cuts down on the overall width of the bicycle rack you do not have those long arms hanging out. And also, on the bottom of the cradle here is a little indention to store the hook that actually holds the bikes into place. This is the strap that holds the bicycle wheel in place. Pull up on the button and it releases. And when you put your bicycle in, you just reinstall the strap and tighten it down. It also has a little ratchet to it, also. And the front cradle is very simple. Again, this just folds out to grab the front wheel, and it just sits in there in place, and that is all there is to it. And this hook here, this is the part that actually grabs on top of the bike and pulls down. And it actually has a ratchet action that helps lock into place. Next we will go ahead and install a bike and show you how it gets fitted onto the rack and you can see how it gets tied down to the rack.

All right, take the mast and just unfold it all the way. Put your bike into the tray. Go ahead and bring the mast back up. Bring it over the front wheel and just ratchet it down. Pull your strap through, push it through the buckle, ratchet, and you are set to go within seconds. All right, next, once you have your bike or bikes loaded, go ahead and install your security cable. It is very simple. Basically, you just wrap it around the frame in any fashion as you see fit. It has this loop right here. So you run it through itself and onto the attachment point onto the bicycle rack right here. And your bike is secured physically and also with the cable locks, so definitely this bike will not go anywhere. And the most important feature about this bicycle rack is the built-in bottle opener, right here. And that covers the review of part number Y02419, the Yakima HoldUp.
