Review of a Yakima DoubleDown 2 Hitch Bike Rack

Today we are going to show you part number Y02423 from Yakima. This is their DoubleDown 2 Bicycle Rack. This is a bicycle rack that will fit both 2-inch receivers, as shown here, and also 1-1/4 inch receiver hitches. A couple of nice features about this rack: it has all steel construction, it does tilt down, and the arms also tilt up and down for storage and for carrying bikes. These are tools that help you assemble the bicycle rack and install it on your trailer hitch. It also has a little Allen key, here. What this Allen key does is, it allows you undo the bolts so you can convert it from a 1-1/4 inch to a 2-inch receiver hitch. We will go ahead and show you how to do that next. It goes right here. Undo this bolt, take off the bushing, and there you have it - it is ready to go for 1-1/4 inch receiver hitch. We will go ahead and show you the details of this bicycle rack a little closer now.

First off, we will talk about the hitch bolt itself. Basically, what this does is, it bolts the bicycle rack to the hitch, becoming one with the vehicle so it does not rattle around. All you have got to do is just tighten it down use a 3/4-inch wrench, and Yakima does supply one also for that purpose. And also on the other side there is a safety clip, too. Next, we will cover the tilt feature. It is pretty easy to use. Basically, you pull up on this red button, here, then tilt the bicycle rack back. That allows easy access to the back of your vehicle. All right, next we will go ahead and unfold the arms. Again, you just push the button in and unfold the arms. It is pretty easy. All right, let us go ahead and put a bicycle on there.

It slides over the cradles, like so. And it also has a built-in anti-sway, so just put that toward your downtube and then use your strap to tighten it into position. All in a matter of seconds, the bicycle is already stored and ready to go down the road. And now we will go ahead and point out some of the features of the cradles themselves which make this a very nice bicycle rack. First off, we will talk about the straps. They have plenty of length to fit virtually any bicycle out there, and also they are moveable from front to rear. And also, one side has a built-in anti-sway device. As you can see, the anti-sway part actually folds into the cradle itself. It is nice for clearance, especially on some smaller frames that are out there. And also, there some ridges inside the cradles, here, that actually prop up the bike away from the cables, so your cables are not constantly rubbing on the paint job of your bike. On the very ends of the arms are bottle openers. All right, that covers our review of part number Y02423, the DoubleDown from Yakima.
