Review of a Yakima Boa Roof Mounted Bike Rack
Today we are going to cover part number Y02065 from Yakima. This is their Boa bicycle rack. This product will mount onto your existing crossbars on your roof rack of your vehicle. This will fit either the round or square bars. It is pretty simple to use. We will go through some of the features and show you how it works.
All right, we have got the pieces laid out in two halves. This is the front half. This is the part where the fork of your bicycle will get attached to here. This is where the rear wheel will get attached to this cradle here. We will cover some of the features here, starting off with the mounts that go on the crossbars. These are designed to go on round or square bars. And next we will talk about the skewer, here. It is pretty easy to use. This goes through and threads on, and when you tighten it down into place, it actually has a little provision for a lock right here that you can add to it to work with Yakimas Same Key System. No tools are needed, since the Allen key is supplied with the kit. All right, we will cover some of the features of the back wheel. This is the cradle itself it is all plastic. It is nice and lightweight but very strong. The strap that holds the wheel down is extra-thick, so the back wheel definitely will not go anywhere. No tools are needed to attach to the rear crossbar. It is adjustable on this mount right here to sit level like this or at an angle, as you need it to. All right, now let us go ahead and install this on a set of typical load bars and give you a better idea of how it looks.
Basically, the screws will go from the top down and then the bottom plate will go underneath of it. And then you simply run the bolts down. Just snug them up first. Before you snug it down tight, take a second to move it back and forth into position where you want it. Then you want to have this tilted down a little bit so where the skewer goes is right above the crossbar. Once you have it set up the way you want it, then just go ahead and tighten them down. Just go ahead and snap on your cover and then install the skewer. All right, and now you can move on to the rear crossbar. The second part has this snap-on piece that just goes over the bar. You can bolt on the rear wheel carrier.
And there are a couple of options with this, depending on your rack and depending on how long the bike is and the configuration of your rack. You can actually mount this in two different positions at an angle like this or you can mount it straight up and down like that. Once you decide which way you want it, then you can go ahead and install the bolts from the inside out and it through the clamp here. And then install your handle nut. And, depending on the length of your bike, you may have it flat like this or you can have it tilted down at an angle, too. And again, it is just preference on the bike itself. But to leave it snug, when you put the bike on there it will conform to what it needs to. Okay, at this point we will go ahead and line up the carriers and put on a bike.
What you want to do is tighten up the skewer. Some bikes will have a little bit of interference so sometimes you have to start with the handle on the other side. So, if that is the case, you want to take the skewer off and just flip it over and reinstall it. And on the back area here, you can see how it conformed to what it needed to on the bicycle wheel. Then go ahead and snug that down. Then install your strap that goes over the top and clamps into place. All right, and that is all it takes. All right, and there you have it for part number Y02065 from Yakima, the Boa.
