Today we are going to cover part number TH987XT from Thule. This is Thules hitch-mounted Ski Rack that actually mounts to your existing bicycle rack, and it bolts on and it clamps on into place. It is pretty easy to do, and we will go ahead and show you how it works. Some of the features of this ski carrier are that it fits up to six pairs of skis or four snowboards. This does require the use of a Thule hitch-mounted bicycle carrier to work.
To set up the bicycle rack to accept the ski rack, what you want to do is take your cradles and push them as far apart as possible. We just have the two-bike version here to make things simple. You may have to adjust the cradles if you have got a bicycle rack that carries more than two bikes. What essentially happens is the two adapters are installed on the bars here and here and also onto the upright, too. We will go ahead and install the clamps first. They just simply snap over the bar there is one on each side. And at that point we can go ahead and install our ski rack. What you want to do is set your ski rack on those clamps and then install the bolts from top to bottom. It simply goes from the top through the bottom, into the nut at the bottom of the clamp. Just get them started. And do that on both sides. Leave the bolts loose. And what is going to happen is we will scoot the ski rack back toward the front of the bicycle rack so the bottom crossbar makes contact with the upright. And once you have it up against the upright, then go ahead and install the U-bolt clamp. Put on your spacers and install the knobs. Then you can simply tighten everything up. Go back toward the top. Tighten down your bolts with the included Allen key. At this point the ski rack is ready to accept your skis.
To install your skis, undo your locking handle. Push it to the side and pull this locking bar out. What this does is it actually protects the skis from being stolen from the rack itself. Install your skis one at a time. Stack them, and get them situated where the bindings do not interfere with the rubber padding and you can still close your crossbar. And once you have that figured out, then go ahead and get your rubber straps that mount here and here on both sides and actually attach it to this carrier itself. Then you strap one of the hooks here. Keep the strap with the hooks closest to your skis. All right, once you have the skis loaded, just go ahead and put the crossbar back into place. And once you have it tightened up, lock the knob and that way it can spin but it cannot come off. With some thicker skis, bindings might get in the way. This arm is adjustable to accommodate the extra width. Then everything goes back together just the same way. All right, with our skis installed we are ready to hit the slopes. And there you have it for part number TH987XT from Thule.
