Review of a Swagman XP 5 Bike Folding Rack for 2 Hitches
Today we are going to show you part number S64970 from Swagman, the folding five-bike rack for 2-inch trailer hitches. This is a really nice bicycle rack that has all padded cradles. What is really good about that is it grips the bike securely and also without any risk of rubbing the cables against the frame. This is a really nice setup. It only has one arm so it can grab relatively narrow frames. This bicycle rack also tilts back to allow easy access to the back of your SUV or pickup. It features solid steel construction with a powder coated finish, and this bicycle rack is intended for 2-inch receiver hitches only. And the shank on this bicycle rack also is adjustable with two different points, depending on the bumper and hitch combination.
We will cover some of the details of this bicycle rack, starting off with the shank and the hitch pin. It uses an 5/8 hitch pin, and it has two spaces on the shank so you can adjust the bicycle rack distance between the bumper and the rack and also to take into account for hitch and bumper variances. Next, we will talk about the tilt feature, which is pretty nice. It allows you to get into the back of your vehicle without having to take off the entire bicycle rack. This model actually has a locking pin it looks like a Coke machine key. You unlock it and then what you want to do next is give the post here a gentle pull up, and then you can allow it to fold backwards. Let us go ahead and put a bike on here and show you how it works.
First we want to take one of the knobs, pull it out of your way, and then take off the lid. Once you have your bike in place you can go ahead and put your lid back on and then tighten it back down. And there you have it this bicycle is ready to hit the road. And once you have your bike in place, we will show you some detail about the cradle.
First off, on the last cradle in, if you will notice there is a knob with a set of keys with it. This locking knob is actually security for this bicycle rack. Say, for instance, you have another bike on here and you clamped it down. When you have it clamped down, once you have it locked, all you can do is spin the knob, but it will not unscrew. Therefore, with that one bike in place and you cannot take it off, you cannot get any of the other bikes off the rack, either. All right, now I will show you some of the padding in the cradles here. You can see there are grooves in the padding itself to allow room for the cables, on top and on the bottom pad, also. As you can see here, the cables are fitting exactly right into the grooves and they are not rubbing against the frame. As you can see, the bike we have here is an alternative frame, where the downtube is at an angle, yet we have the bike relatively straight. That is because the cradles are adjustable. You can tilt them on the rack as you need and then you tighten down the U-bolt basically right here to keep it in place. You can move them from front to rear, also. If you notice, this one last cradle actually has a special plate built in. And what that is for is for basically a kind of safety strap. The safety strap actually clamps onto here, and then the rest of this strap will go onto some part of the vehicle itself, and that allows just a little bit of extra security and a little bit of weight-carrying capacity, also, to the rack. That is especially helpful if you have this bike rack fully loaded with all five bikes. Just a little extra safety feature and one other thing to help keep it from moving around, too. That covers our review of art number S64970 from Swagman.
