Review of a Superwinch EPi 9.0 High-Performance Recovery Winch

Today we are going to cover part number 09034 from Superwinch. This is their EPi 9.0 High-Performance Recovery Winch. This winch is rated at 9,000 pounds. It features power load in and out. It also incorporates the freespooling clutch that allows you to pull up the cable by hand when you need to, so you do not have to wait on a slow motor to pull it out. This also has a quiet and efficient, full metal, three-stage planetary gear box. The motor is a 4.6 horsepower series wound motor. It comes complete with a roller fairhead, that you see in the front there, that reduces the wear and strain on the wire rope while you are doing winching applications. It also comes with a hand-held remote so that you can stand back, safely out of the way, to operate the winch and get your vehicle out of its stuck position. It also has an automatic load-holding brake. And it also includes a pulley block to give you double capacity on your cable. We will go ahead and point out some of these features on the winch itself.

We will cover some of the accessories in detail here. First off, this is your winch strap right here. And this will go on the end of your hook so you do not have to really handle that part while you are holding the cable out. You might get some sharp edges or something in there. That just slips onto the hook. This is the pulley that splits apart. Put your cable inside there, and then you put your hook against the object that you are going to be pulling against. And effectively, that doubles your cables capacity. Next we have the remote that plugs into the winch so you can stand safely away while you are doing your winching application. And this remote plugs in right here. To control the winch, you have this thumb knob right here. You push the button up to go out and then the opposite to pull back in. It is kind of slow. You can actually put it in the free spool mode by pulling this handle up and turning it. And then to pull it back in, of course, re-engage the clutch and winch back in. And one other thing I want to show you is the roller fairhead that comes with the winch. And these rollers here protect the cable while you are pulling it in or out. And there is a roller on the top, there is a roller on the bottom, and there is one on each side. So if you are at an odd angle when you are winching against something, your cable still is protected because it has a nice surface to roll against.

We are going to demonstrate this product. We are going to tie our FJ off to a tree here and we are just going to pull it across the slope just to give you a general idea of how this will work. We are using a tree saver strap and we are going to run the strap through our pulley block. That way we will run the cable back to the FJ so we can double our line capacity. We are going to go ahead and run our switch forward and we will activate the winch. As you can see, it is pulling the vehicle across the slope.
