Review the Kuat Alpha Bike Rack
Today we are going to show you part number A101 from Kuat. This is a folding and locking 3 bike aluminum rack for 2 inch trailer hitches. This is a Kuat Alpha Orange model. This is one of the more unique bicycle racks on the market and is available in 2 different colors. It is built out of light weight aluminum. The cradles are adjustable and they rotate around, and you can also push them back and forth. The whole assembly can fold flat, so it does not take up much space when you are not using it. Next we will talk about one of the best parts about this bicycle rack. It is built completely out of aluminum and is really light weight, weighing under 15 pounds. What we have here is their 3 bike bicycle carrier and we will show you how it works. Once you get the bike rack out of the hitch, you can fold this up as well. You just pull out the pin and this whole assembly spins around. And what is really nice about this is the fact that you can toss it anywhere out of the way, you do not have to worry about it. It is also available in black (A102).
Now we will go ahead and show you how it installs on your vehicle. Once you get your bicycle rack out of the box, this is how it comes. It is already in the stored position, which is really nice because it does not take up hardly any amount of room whatsoever. To unfold it, it only requires basically taking out 2 clips and then putting them back together. First off we will start with the part that goes inside the hitch. Spin this around, all the way back, and just reinstall the pin. At this point we can go ahead and install it in the hitch. Once you put the bicycle rack into your hitch, you can lock it with its included locking pin, which leads us to our next feature, the anti-rattle device. This is really nice because all you have to do is a twist to the knob and it expands on the inside of the hitch to keep it from rocking around. On this upright here, it has its own anti-rattle device. This little knob right here just pushes against the pin and keeps it from moving around.
Now, to raise the arms that hold the bikes, again just pull out this one clip, raise the arms, and reinstall the clip. And also, on the back of the arms, it has its own anti-rattle device too, which keeps it from moving around also. Again, it is just a nice little set screw that keeps it from moving. The next thing that we are going to show you on the arms are the nice little cradles themselves. These are really unique. In fact, each cradle comes with anti-sway devices built in. So you can put them on both sides of the bike or just one side, it does not matter. You do not have to orientate the bike either way to make sure it hits with the anti-sway device. The cradles are pretty nice and fully adjustable. As you can see here, we have been moving them around left and right. And also you can move them from front to rear. You can loosen them with this little spin knob right here, so you can move them backwards or forwards as you need it. Once you have it set to where you want it, just go ahead and tighten down this knob and it is not going to go anywhere. You can fine tune these cradles with this little knob on the back side here. You push it down and then you can actually squeeze the cradle and make it narrow as you need, to make it match up with your bicycle frame.
And when you release the lever, it is locked into place and cannot go anywhere else. Now we will go ahead and install a bike and show you how the straps and anti-sway cradles work. In this instance here, we can actually use both anti-sway devices. Just pull your straps over top and hook them into place. You can still, if you want, fine tune the cradles just a little bit to make it fit the frame. What is also nice about this bicycle carrier is that it has this built in security. Basically, there is a cable here on the inside here that wraps around the bike when you put it on the end of the rack. You wrap it around the first bike frame and then just go ahead and thread it into the side of the lock here, and just push it in place. Push the button, and it is locked. And there you have it for part # A101 from Kuat, the folding locking 3 bike aluminum bike rack for two inch trailer hitches.
