Review of the Draw Tite 3 Bike Folding and Towing Carrier
Today we are going to be showing you part number 40123 from Draw Tite. This is their folding 3 bike towing rack for 2 inch trailer hitch receivers. This is a 3 bike carrier that mounts to the shank of a class III, 2 inch square ball mount which is not included with this package. It includes 3 bolts to ensure a snug fit and a minimum 10 inch clearance is required between the hitch pin hole and the ball hole for mounting. Extra long ball mounts with a rise/drop usually do not work because of the angled metal supporting the ball mount face. This is a tilting bike rack and it also locks into place when not in use. You can tell that it has, of course, the 3 cradles on the top there which screw down to ensure stability while you are driving down the road.
We will go ahead and start pointing out some of these features to you. Alright we are going to show you some of the features of this bike rack. We will first show you how to actually attach it to your vehicle. That will require a ball mount that is sold separately. Now, as you can see here, you have to have it off the truck first to actually slide this onto the ball mount. Now, you want to mind the measurements that we said earlier about how far it has to be from the center of the pin hole here. Just for our purposes right now, we will loosely tighten it just so we can get it into the hitch right now and then just move on from there.
Then you just insert it into the 2 inch hitch. At least a minimum of 10 inches here, from the pin hole to pin hole. It looks like we have surpassed that with 12 inches. Now we can actually really tighten things down. Next we will show you how the tilting mechanism works. Simply unlock the locking mechanism that keeps it up right, then lift up and lean it towards you to get to the rear of your vehicle. As you can see here, there is a weather cover for your lock and you use a soda machine like key to open it up and once this pops out you know it is unlocked. Then like I said before, you lift up and let it lean towards you and now you can get to the rear of your vehicle. Alright, next we are going to go ahead and put a bike on there. But first, you have to remove the top plate of the cradle section and you just simply unscrewing the knobs until they completely come off and then removing the plate.
With that off, now we can actually install our bike. We are going to use a standard frame bike for this. But this bike is free to use adapters for it for alternate frames as well, if need be. Alright, we are going to go ahead and install this here, we will use the middle one. Just let it rest in there like so and then put the plate back on and screw it down tight. The bike is secure on the rack. It is ready for travel down the road. Next we are going to go ahead and show you the cradles here. They are pretty basic, nothing real much to them. They have nice rubber padding here to ensure that there is no scratching on your frame. And there is also these little grooves here that fit the cables in, to make sure that they do not get mashed up against the frame when you install it.
