PK11916
$14.95
Today we are going to install brake controller part number 90185 from Tekonsha, the Prodigy Brake Controller, and we are going to install this on a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado. And on the back of the vehicle, we are going to install part number PK11916. This is a 7-Way Car Replacement Socket, and we are going to use part number 20047 from Tow-Ready, the 7-way car replacement socket. The replacement socket is going to fit right here where it would normally be a factory connection. Since this vehicle does not have it, all you have to do is unscrew this counter-clockwise, pull it out, and there is actually the wiring harness right behind it. So all you do is just push down on this tab right here and it comes apart. Then we will take our connector and just pop it back into place. Make sure the latch is secured, and then go ahead and reattach it like the cover was. Now we will go underneath and inside the cab of the truck and go ahead and start installing the brake controller.
The next thing we need to do is locate the wiring harness for the brake controller. It is going to be up back behind here. On this wire bundle right here, there will be a little tag that will help you identify it. But also you will find a bundle of wires with a bright blue wire - I am sorry, with a thick, blue wire - and that will be it. OK, we have put our butt connectors on the wires we are going to use. The blue one here is going to be for output from the brake controller, so that will go blue on our brake control cable. All right, and then the light blue with the white stripe is going to be the brake switch feed, so that will go to red on our cable. And then the red one with the black stripe is going to be our 12-volt power supply, and that will go to the black wire on the cable. And then the white wire here will be our ground, and that will go to the white wire on the cable.
OK, we will hook up the blue wire first, blue to blue, and then our 12-volt power supply. That will go to the red with the black stripe. The ground wire, that is going to be white to white. And the stoplight switch is going to be red to blue with the white stripe. And the orange wire back here is going to be left alone we are not going to use that wire at all. Now we will tape our connections and start installing our brake controller underneath the dash. Next, find a place to mount our bracket. We can actually mount it right here. We can actually use this existing screw, and then we can screw it onto this piece of plastic right here. There is a piece of metal all the way through here, but through this short section right here, there is not any, so we can actually just screw it right in here and not have to worry about it. Let us go ahead and take this one off. We will take a second now and just put the brake controller in there temporarily and just line it up with the truck so it is aligned front to rear with the vehicle. After you get it the way you want it, we will go ahead and install one of the other screws. Next we will go ahead and plug our cable into the back of the brake controller, and then we will just mount our brake controller up to the bracket.
All right, next we need to hook the power up to the fuse box that is underneath the hood. All right, next we have to get to the power supply box here. What we do is take this lid off, and we are going to connect to this stud right here. That powers the brake controller. And the wire for that is tucked down - back here, there is a wire for the brake controller, a wire harness right here. Pull this out and it will go on that post right here. All right, the nut does not come with this, so you will have to make a run to the hardware store to find a metric nut that will fit the threads. OK, put the handle back down, and then check to see if your brake controller has power. That pretty much finishes our install of the brake controller. So there you have it for part number 90185, the Prodigy Brake Controller from Tekonsha, and part number PK11916, the 7-Way Car Replacement Socket.
