Installation of a Wiring Harness on a 1999 Ford Crown Victoria

Today we are going to be installing tail light converter part number 119175 on a 1999 Ford Crown Victoria. OK, we are inside the trunk of the vehicle, and to locate the wires that we are going to need to tap into for the harness, we are going to need to remove a few pieces from the trunk area. We need to remove this rear threshold piece, and then we will need to pull back the carpeting as well, that is right behind the tail light assembly. The threshold piece has four clips that we are going to need to remove that will allow us to pull it off. And the carpeting has one screw holding it on. So we are going to go ahead and remove those first. And we should be able to gain access to all the wires necessary over here on the drivers side. You can see the main lead going over to the passengers side is right here. OK, now that we have got the carpeting pulled back, you can see we have got the main wiring harness here feeding the drivers side tail light assembly, and we have got the harness that is coming across for the the passengers side assembly.

What I will do is cut back some of the jacketing here covering the wires. I am going to go ahead and test these to figure out which one carries the appropriate function that we are looking for. We are also going to strip back just a little bit here on the main harness feeding the passengers side so that we can locate the right-turn signal as well. We are going to start by testing for the left-turn signal, which appears to be the orange wire with the blue stripe. And next we will test for the brakes, which is the green wire. Next we will test for the running lights, which appears to be the brown wire. We are going to connect on our converter box. The yellow wire will go to the left turn. The red wire will go to the brake. The brown wire will go to the running lights. And then our white wire will be a ground. You can either use a self-tapping screw and drill a hole to secure the ground somewhere in this area, or - as you can see - we have got a grounding stud already located right here. So I am probably going to go ahead and use that as our grounding point. And then, down here at the other harness, we want to test for the right-turn signal, which again at this section is the orange wire with the blue stripe that we will hook up the green wire to on the converter box.

To make our connections, we are just going to use basic Scotch locks. This will allow us to tap into the wire without cutting it. I am just going to slide it over the existing wire and put the converter box through the other hole. Just get a pair of pliers and crimp that down. And that is all you need to do, except for that cover. Fold that over. And that was our left-turn signal for our brake lead we will connect to the green wire. And then the green and right-turn wire will hook onto our orange with red stripe down here. And last I am just going to take our white wire and connect it to this existing grounding stud. Then we just want to take our converter box - you can see on the back side it has double-sided tape - I am just going to find a nice, secure location and go ahead and mount that. I am going to go ahead and attach it to this flat surface right here. It is a good idea to use a cleaning solution and clean this up a little bit before you try to apply the adhesive. The only thing left to do is go ahead and tape up all the connections that we made, and our installation will be complete. And then you also may want to secure any of those loose wires that you may have left over. And route your 4-pole right out through the bottom portion where the threshold was. The 4-pole is obviously going to stay inside the vehicle when not in use. When you want to use it, you can go ahead and pull it out of the trunk area. The weatherstripping at the rear will prevent it from getting pinched when you close the trunk. This will conclude the installation of wiring harness converter part number 119175 on a 1999 Ford Crown Victoria.
