Installation of a Wiring Harness on a 2008 Jeep Patriot
Today we are going to be installing wiring harness part number 118446 on a 2008 Jeep Patriot. The attaching points for our wiring harness are going to be located directly behind the tail light assembly on both sides of the vehicle. So, the first thing we want to do is to remove the tail lights. There are two push pins on each assembly that need to be pulled out. With the push pins removed we can remove our tail light assembly. You can see this is the connector we are looking for to make our connection to our wiring harness. To remove the tail light we want to take this red tab and pull it out and then push the little clip here and pull it right off.
We are going to take the connector with the yellow and brown wires in it and connect the one end onto the tail light assembly. Be sure you push the red tab back in. And plug the other side into the vehicle end. Again, push the red tab in. You can see on this particular connecting side, there is a ring terminal here for a ground. You want to go ahead and take the self-tapping screw and ground it directly to the bottom of the body here behind the tail light assembly. There is a self-tapping screw that is provided in the installation kit that will allow us to do this. With the ground stud attached, we want to go ahead and route the connector with the green wire on it down through the hole in between the bumper and the body here. So what I am going to do is just strip back a little bit of the jacketing here on the wire - on both the red, and the black as well. We are just going to use the provided butt connector. You can go ahead and take the black wire and feed it down between the body and the bumper as well. Before we fully feed that through there, we do want to make sure we put some electrical tape onto the connection so that it stays weather safe. And then we can also feed the 4-pole in, down through the opening as well.
With all those wires pulled through, we want to go ahead and take - before we feed the whole Modulite down as well - you can see there is double-sided tape here on the back side. That is going to allow us to stick it to a body component here so that it does not have to go down all the way below the vehicle and be subject to the elements. So what I am going to do is, I am going to clean off a section. Right in here is a flat piece that I am going to clean off really good with some soapy water. And I am going to go ahead and adhere the Modulite box to that right there. And with that cleaned off, again, I am just going to pull back the double-sided tape, make sure that all my wires are out of the way, and then go ahead and adhere that to that flat piece of metal there. You can kind of see it there, now that it is adhered. It is on there nice and tight, and that will keep it, again - there is still a little bit of access underneath the vehicle where the elements can still get to it, but it is definitely better than letting it hang all the way down below. And then, with the Modulite adhered, we can go ahead and put our tail light assembly back on.
I am going to go ahead and show the way to route the green wire connector all the way over to the passengers side. As you can see, there are some plugs that are holding the fascia to the underbody of the vehicle. We can actually just route the connector right behind those. And that will keep the connector up and out of harms way. And again, we will just feed this up through the opening between the body and the bumper, up to the passengers side tail light assembly. All right, and then for the 4-pole, as well, we can do the same thing - feed it behind the plugs here. And then I am just going to tie that off here at the trailer hitch, like so, and then use some of the zip-ties provided in the installation kit to secure these loose wires. And after we make our connection to the tail light on the passengers side we are going to come back down, we are going to route the black wire all the way up to the positive side of the battery. And as you can see, I have taken off the passengers side tail light assembly here, and I am going to go ahead and make our connections here as well. And then I am going to go ahead and put our tail light assembly back on. I am going to kind of show the path that I used to route the wire up to the front.
OK, now I am up to where the engine compartment is. I have actually just run a piece of fish wire from the engine compartment down here below. I am just going to attach my wire to it, feed it back up through, and then we will go ahead and make our connection to the battery. We are back up inside the engine compartment now, and I have got the other end of my fish wire. I am just going to go ahead and pull the wire up through. With the wire up in the compartment here we want to route it over to the battery, where we are going to make our connection. On this particular vehicle, it has a little cover over it, so we want to go ahead and remove that first. With the cover removed, we are going to go ahead and route our wire. What we are going to do next is go ahead and take our fuse holder that is provided with our installation kit. We are going to go ahead and cut it in half, and then we want to install one of the ring terminals that is provided with the installation kit as well. And that part is going to go directly onto the battery terminal. This particular battery has a couple of accessory studs on it, so I am going to use one of those to hook on to. OK, take the rest of our black wire, kind of figure out how much extra we are going to need, and cut off any excess. And then we will take the butt connector that is provided in the installation kit, and we will connect both the black wire and the other end of the fuse holder. And with our connection made, we want to go ahead and tape it up. And then we just want to go ahead and install our 10-amp fuse, which, again, is in the wiring kit. And then secure any extra, loose wires that we may have, and our installation will be complete. All right, this will conclude the installation of wiring harness part 118446 on a 2008 Jeep Patriot.
