Cadillac DeVille Wiring

Installation of a Wiring Harness for a Trailer on a 2000 Cadillac DeVille

Today on this 2000 Cadillac DeVille we will be installing part number 119176KIT. We are inside the trunk of the DeVille. We need to first gain access to the wires that we are going to need to tap into for our wiring harness. These wires are going to be located directly behind the driver side tail lights. First you need to start disassembling the trunk area so we can gain access to the wires. We need to remove the two set screws on the back of the tail light first. We will need to remove the same two on the passenger side as well. We are also going to remove the cover for the spare tire to give us a little more working room. Next we will remove the rear threshold piece here. With the four thumb screws removed we can just pry up on it to release the clips at the bottom side. Just set that off to the side for the time being. 00:48

I am going to remove these screws here at the bottom of the trunk well that is holding the carpet to the floor. I will need to remove the same two on the passenger side as well. From there we can start pulling back the interior carpeting here. You can see now that we have gained access to the wires at the back of the driver side tail light we will next pull back some of the tape there and start testing the wires to find out which wire carries which function. What I have gone ahead and done is peel back some of the tape here at the forward side of the wiring harness and gone ahead and tested the wires. On this particular vehicle the brake and turn signal are already on the same wires, so you do not need to use the converter function of our modulite box. 01:38

Our yellow wire is going to be our left turn slash left brake, our green wire is our right turn right brake, and our purple wire is our running light lead. What we want to do next is take our modulite and you will see that we have got our wires that we are going to need to tap in to the vehicle itself. It is going to be fairly similar to the wires that we see on the vehicle. The left turn is going to be the yellow wire, right turn is the green wire, running lights are the brown wire, white wire is the ground. The red wire here, the smaller gauge of the red wire is for the brake and since the brakes are not separate on this vehicle we can actually take and ground this wire to the chassis along with the white wire. The heavier gaged red wire with the butt connector on it, that is going to be our power feed. We are going to need to take the 12 gage black wire, hook it to this and route it to the positive side of the battery. To make my connections I am going to be using the basic quick splice. You will notice that the quick splice has two openings in it for the two wirings that are going to be connecting together. We will slide it over the wire on the vehicle. Take the wire from the modulite, slide it in to the other side and then just take a pair of pliers and crimp down the metal tab on the top like so and our connection is made and flip the lid over the top which will close our connection tight for us and that is all there is to it. 03:34

We want to do the same for the green wire and the brown wire for the running lights and the right turn. You will notice that the green wire has a longer lead to it and that is because typically we need to route it all the way over to the passenger side to make our connection. Since on this vehicle we do have access all on the same side I am going to shorten the green wire. The left turn is going to be the yellow wire. Right turn is the green wire. I am going to take the red wire and strip off a little bit of the end so that I can add a ring terminal to it. That is going to be grounded to the body along with the white wire. I am going to take the self tapping screw that is provided with our installation kit. Go ahead and ground those two pieces. You can take and ground right here to the body component and that should provide a suitable grounding point. Next take the modulite box itself which you can see on the back side it has double sided tape. You can adhere it to the inside of the body and just adhere it to the back wall. You may want to take a light solvent and clean that area off first before you adhere the modulite box to it. Next from the modulite wiring kit we want to take the large black bundle of wire, the 12 gage black wire and connect it to the red wire on our modulite. Wrap that in some electrical tape and do the same thing for the connections over on the wiring harness. We next want to figure out how we want to route our wire up to the battery. It is actually located underneath the rear seat inside the vehicle so that we do not have to make too long of a run but we do need to find a way inside the vehicle. To remove the rear seat all we need to do is take and underneath the front lip kind of pull up and you will feel the clip release. There is one on the driver side and one on the passenger side as well. You will notice on the passenger side there is a wiring harness clip that we need to remove as well so that we can fully remove this rear seat. 06:30

With that removed you can see our battery and if you look here on the driver side we have got a relay box as well with a positive terminal. We are actually going to use that as our hook up point so it will be easier to hook in to than these side mounts on the battery. With us hooking in to the actual fuse block there I am actually go back inside the trunk and if you go up to the front area and start pulling back the paneling you can see we have got a large lead of wire coming up right down the driver side that is actually leading underneath the seat right over to where the battery and the fuse block are. So if we just follow along there with our black wire we will be able to get inside the vehicle itself. With the wire pulled through into the battery compartment we can make our connection. I am going to try to hide the wires as much as possible. I am just going to remove the lid for the fuse block. Take the nut off of the positive feed. Next take the fuse holder from the kit to cut the loop in half. To the one end we are going to add a ring terminal which is going to connect to our positive terminal over there. The other end we are going to add the butt connector which we are going to connect to the black wire that we fed from our modulite. Make the connection to the positive terminal first so we can figure out how much length of the black wire we need. Next we can take our black wire and cut it to length. Strip off a little bit of the jacketing and connect to our fuse holder. Tape up that connection and finally add the fuse to the fuse holder. From there just secure up any loose wires we may have using the cable ties that are provided with our installation kit and then we can reassemble our trunk area and our installation is complete. With all of our loose wires connected up out of the way and all of our interior reinstalled we have got the 4-pole left over inside the trunk and when we want to use it just simply pull it outside of the trunk and make our connection to the trailer. The weather stripping will keep the wire from getting pinched when you close the trunk on it. With that, that will conclude the installation of modulite part number 119176KIT on 2000 Cadillac DeVille.
