Review of the Yakima HullRaiser J-Style Roof Mounted Kayak Carrier

Today we are going to review the Yakima HullRaiser J-style roof mounted kayak carrier, pert number Y04039. The Yakima HullRaiser is a J-shaped cradle design that holds your kayak almost upright on top of the vehicle. The HullRaiser is designed to work with both Yakima round crossbars and square load bars. Optional mounts can be purchased to fit onto OEM style crossbars. The HullRaiser comes with heavy duty straps and padded cam buckles to secure the kayak to the cradles. Also included are bow and stern tie-down straps. Depending on the design of the kayak, you may be able to attach these straps to the bow and stern and then to the bumper, hitch or tow hooks of your vehicle. 0:40

The Yakima HullRaiser is a J-shaped cradle. On the front and bottom of the HullRaiser cradle are rubberized plastic pads. These pads will help keep the Kayak from shifting around and will also protect it from damage. Along the upright is a heavy, foam rubber pad that will also help protect your kayak. To install the HullRaiser, we are going to be attaching these clips to our round crossbars. Once we have our clips installed, we will our bolt into the mounting hole. We will feed it through the clip on our crossbar and attach our hex key wing nuts at the bottom. Now we will install the HullRaiser on the vehicle. First we will attach our clip to the crossbar, making sure that one clip faces one direction and the other faces the opposite direction. Check your HullRaiser to make sure which way it needs to go. With the clips on, we are ready to grab our HullRaiser, set it on top and our bolts through. 1:35

Once we have our bolt pushed through and seated all of the way, we will go ahead and take our hex key wing nut and begin to tighten it on. We will get it just snug enough so it stays in place and then we will grab our other bolt and wing nut and do it on the other side. We will make sure that our HullRaiser is nice and level and then we will tighten down the wing nuts. Once we have the unit nice and secure, we will go ahead and repeat the same procedure for the rear crossbar. Once we have both of the HullRaiser cradles attached, we are ready to go ahead and load our kayak. Next we are going to feed our padded cam buckle straps through the top of the J on the cradle and bring it back across the kayak. We will tighten down our strap and we will wrap our excess out of the way. We use the same procedure to attach the strap over the rear cradle. With our cam straps securely tightened over our kayak, we are ready to hit the road. At this point, if you have tie-down points on the bow and stern of your kayak, you can use the included bow and stern ropes to anchor the kayak to your vehicles bumper, tow hook or even hitch. And that will do it for the Yakima HullRaiser J-style roof mounted cargo carrier, part number Y04039.
