Today we are going to review part number A90095 from SportRack. This is their roof cargo carrier. First off, you can get in the cargo box from the passenger side of the vehicle. It has two locks to secure that side of the lid, and it also has spring loaded hinges to help you pop up the lid, sometimes it is going to be a little high above your head and you will need a little help pushing it up. It has foam weather stripping around the edge perimeter of the lid itself and the bottom so it keeps everything nice and dry on the inside. :28
It uses 4 u-bolts and plates combination to secure this cargo box to your roof rack, rather its the Thule rack, round bar rack, or factory roof rack as we are going to use in this review. It is also constructed of high-density polyethylene construction, is UV resistant, durable, and is made in the USA. :45
We will now show you how the u-bolts mount on the inside. The u-bolt will go around your factory roof rack bar, or your aftermarket roof rack bars. It will go through two holes in the bottom of the cargo carrier, and then there is a plate that goes on top and the handle nuts that simply thread on. You need four of these to do the job. Also you will note that on the four points attachment here they are fixed. So it is a good idea to have your roof rack bars adjusted accordingly. If you have a factory roof rack, make sure the cross bars can be adjusted front to rear. 1:20
Lets go ahead and install this on our vehicle and give you a better idea of how it looks and how it works. It is lightweight, however it is a good idea to have an extra set of hands to help you put it up there. You can see how the factory roof rails fit inside this groove right here on the cargo carrier itself. We did have to adjust our cargo bars. To get that measurement, basically all we did was that we measured from the center of the two bolt holes for u-bolts on each side. So the center of this, to the center here and we came out at about 21-1/2 inches. To make it easier to put the cargo box on the roof we have everything locked down, we can go ahead and undo the latches, one in the front and one in the rear. And we will unlock the two latches here too. Pop up the lid. The u-bolt will go over the factory roof rack bar, it will go through two holes in the bottom of the cargo carrier, there is a plate that goes on top, then the handle nuts thread right on. We will repeat the same process for the remaining three mounting points. We have our box aligned on the rails and centered on the vehicle, we will go ahead and latch it down. Take our two key locks, lock those down first and make sure it does not move. Then move to the clamps up front and on the rear. We are set to go. There you have it for part number A90095 from SportRack.
Questions and Comments about this Video
I have this carrier but I was coming home from vacation, and even though I had front and back latches latched and both locks locked, somehow the wind caught it and the front and back latches were not strong enough to secure it from the wind. consequently, I lost the latches completely and my carrier blew opened in the wind. Now without the latches, I am unable to secure the carrier. My question is, can I order 2 new latches?????? I ended up having to tie the top to the bottom with a rope and without the latches, it is not safe to travel with. Luckily the rest is in tact and the hindges are still in tact.

We do have the replacement locks with the hooks, the parts on the top half of the shell. Those are part SR03807. If you are missing the bottom pieces, where the hook locks in, let me know and I can find out if they are available as replacement parts.
Patrick B - 11/12/2012I have the Explorer Cargo Box and need a replacement U-bolt, retaining plate and 2 handle nuts.

We do have a replacement hardware kit for that box, but it includes all the hardware. The only individual replacement part Sortrack offers for that box is the locks. If you need other parts, the hardware kit is what they make available. The kit is part SR05587.
Patrick B - 11/19/2012Can I use Reeses adjustable cross bars to mount my sporttrack explorer cargo box on my ford explorer2 2013

The SportRack Explorer box will fit cross bars with maximum diameter of 4 inches. If the width, thickness or diameter of your crossbars is over 4 inches, the box will not fit. Also, SportRack Explorer mounts are fixed so your crossbars need to have a spread of 24 inches. That measures from the center of the front bar to the center of the rear bar.
Patrick B - 12/17/2012I find it difficult to mount the brackets on the hinged side of the box. Helpful hint would be appreciated.

That is one of the drawbacks of a box that only opens from one side. We have found that a step ladder or standing on top of the tires can make accessing the mounting points easier. Also, opening the car doors and standing in the door frame can be enough height.
