Thule Traverse Footpad Review

Volkswagen Jetta Roof Rack

Installation of the Thule Traverse Footpad

Today we are going to review and install part numbers TH480, this is the traverse foot pack. Then we are also going to install the fit kit part number THKIT1393. We are going to use that as a typical install to give you an idea how all this goes together on a typical application. And also, the load bar shown in the back, those are sold separately because you can vary the width of the vehicle and what you are carrying on top. In this case it is THLB50. :27

We have our parts here laid out, I am just going to do one end of the bar so it does not get confusing. We are going to start off with the Traverse foot and then the cap for the load bar. We have a tool that tightens everything down. Then we will move on to the fit kit that holds it in place, and also the foot that goes underneath the foot pack. :44

We are going to start off with our tower here, just slide it onto the bar. What we are going to have to do is loosen this clamp up, so pull back on this latch right here, and then we can slide our bar in. Lets leave that loose for now. What happens is when you push down on this, this actually pulls the clamp towards the bar and locks it in place. Pop on the little cap. Now we will flip the whole assembly over so you can see it easier. We are going to need to open up this door here, just snaps open. And while we are here we can use this tool to tighten down this screw which will clamp it down to the car. And when you are not using it, this tool stores inside. Then next we will go ahead and install the fit kit itself. It is a good idea to grab this piece of metal right here and pull it out a little bit, make sure its screw is sunk in all the way. And then our fit kit fits in this slot right here. You want to push it all the way down, this little lever will be pushed out of the way until it snaps into place. You know you have it in the right spot when this tab comes back down and it catches on the topper here. Go ahead and leave that alone for now. The rubber foot will get snapped onto the bottom. All this does really is gets pushed into place. This bar is partially assembled now we can just go ahead and work on the other side and then we will adjust the width to fit the car. 2:02

Okay we have our roof rack loosely assembled now, what you want to do next is go ahead and center the feet on the crossbar. The directions on the fit kit do give you the dimensions as needed, they even provide a simple ruler to measure out and set everything up with. The back ones measure out to be 39 1/ 8 inches and the front ones end up at 40 1/ 2 inches. Once you have your distance set go ahead and lock it into place pushing this lever down. Now at this point we can go ahead and start installing it on the car. One more detail before we put it on, there is a little hole in the body work here that the fit kit actually goes into. Take out t he little plastic plug, just pop it out, and our fit kit will reside in there when it is all said and done. Now that only applies to the front half of the car, rear doors do not have them. This is where it would be a good idea to have an extra set of hands. We will set our rack into place. Loosen up the bolt here, then you can push down a little bit. It fits right into place. Do the same thing on the other side. When you have them installed then you can alternately snug them down. 3:03

When you tighten these down, this line on the green part here, when you torque it down these two lines will line up and you do not have to go any tighter. And then just simply store the tool inside and snap the lid down. Go ahead and temporarily set our bars in place because there is a specific dimension you want to set these apart form each other. In this case it is going to be 28 3/ 8 ths. Same as before, just go ahead and tighten them down until you have them snug. All right after those steps get installed we have our roof rack ready to go, so we can put whatever we want on top of it. Now that we have everything set up taking everything off and on is going to be a lot easier. That covers our review of part number TH480 and fit kit part number THKIT1393 from Thule.
