Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2005 GMC Safari

Today we are going to install part number 87516 from Hidden Hitch, and we are going to install this on a 2005 GMC Safari van. Next we are going to go ahead and show you where the hitch mounts up onto the frame. All right, what happens is that the hitch will mount up to the bottom of the frame here, and this bracket right here gets removed, and the hitch replaces that bracket. We are looking at the passengers side here, and it is going to be identical on both sides. We will take these two bolts off, and then this one, and this one. All right, on the install on the hitch, it is actually going to use this bolt hole right here, and it is going to be corroded up pretty easy, so you are probably going to have to paint it out and run a tap through it to get all the dirt and corrosion that has been in there the last few years.

Next what we are going to do is install the hitch. We can go ahead and install the hitch using the bolts at the bottom part of the bumper right here. That is the easiest thing to get to, to hang the hitch. Then, after that, we can move the hitch around as needed to get the rest of the bolts in. You want to put the bolts with the threads pointing out the back of the vehicle, on the bottom bolts. And they lock with the flat washer, lock washer and nut on the other side. Now we will go ahead and start attaching bolts to the frame. Do the bolt in the middle and it actually holds everything else in place for you. Next we will do our hardware here. On some models, there might be a gap here, and there is a supplied block if you need it. But in this case, the hitch is sitting right up against it, so we will just go ahead and put our bolts and hardware right through there. Once you have got all the bolts started, you can go ahead and snug them all down.

Once you have got all the bolts snugged down, check the hitch and bumper. Check the bumper for distortion and loosen the hitch and bumper, if necessary, to fix. In this case, we do not have to do anything, so we can go ahead and torque down the bolts, as specified. All right, and that finishes our install of part number 87516 from Hidden Hitch.
