Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2009 Honda Odyssey

Today we are going to be installing Hidden Hitch part number 87479 on a 2009 Honda Odyssey. This application will also apply for Draw-Tite hitch part number 75270. OK, we are underneath the vehicle and we are looking at the passengers side frame rail. You can see the exhaust is in the way over here. So the first thing we want to do is to go ahead and take the exhaust off of its rear-most hanger right here. To do that, we just take a spray lubricant, like a WD-40, spray the stud down really well. And with the exhaust off its hanger, I can kind of pull it away here. And with the exhaust off its hanger, I can kind of pull it away here. And as you can see here at the bottom of the frame, we have got three existing weld nuts. We have got two here at the rear section, and then one more up at the forward side. When we look at the drivers side frame rail, you can see we are going to be using the same weld nuts as on the passengers side. That will be two at the rear, and one at the forward side.

With the weld nuts pointed out, we can go ahead and put the hitch up into position. Before we do that, though, we want to go ahead and clean out the weld nuts thoroughly to ensure that we can get the bolts in easily. To do that, we can again use a spray lubricant, like a WD-40. Spray it directly into the weld nuts, and then we just want to take a wire brush of any sort, and then you run it up into the weld nuts a few times. That will help to loosen any road grime or debris that may be up in there. We can do that for each of the weld nuts, and then you can test fit your bolt a few times to make sure it is going to go in OK. Once you have made sure that the bolts will go in fine, then you can go ahead and put the hitch up into position.

You will notice on the hitch itself, on each arm, that not only do we have the two holes here that are going to align with the weld nuts at the end of the frame, but we have also got two offset holes here at the forward side. You are going to be using either one or the other. For earlier models, we will be using the forward hole, but on this 2009 model we will be using this rear-most hole here. That will be the same on both sides. And to attach the hitch to the frame, we are going to be using the 12-millimeter bolts along with the conical-tooth washers for each of the weld nuts. OK, now that we have got all the bolts in place, we want to go ahead and torque them down. You want to check with your instructions to verify the appropriate torque rating for each individual bolt. With all the bolts torqued down, we just want to make sure we put our exhaust back up on its hanger, and our installation will be complete. This will conclude the installation of hitch part number 87479 on a 2009 Honda Odyssey.
