Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2008 Toyota Tundra

Today we will be installing part number 13198, a hitch from Curt. This is a 2008 Toyota Tundra. Our first step is going to be removing the angle bracket on the inside of your bumper support and underneath the rear frame of the truck. There are a total of four bolts that need to be removed. You can see our angle bracket has been removed. We had two bolts that came from the outside of the frame rail and then two bolts that went up in to the bottom of the frame rail. Now we are going to repeat these same steps on the passenger side. It is identical to the driver side. Now that we have our brackets removed on both sides, I would like to go ahead and take the opportunity to spray the threads just to flush them out a little bit. I am going to do that on both sides. Now is a good time to get a friend or a helping hand to help you hold the hitch while you put it in place. 0:55

We are going to be installing 12 millimeter fine threaded bolts with conical tooth washers, making sure the teeth go up in to the bottom of the frame. OK, I am going to go ahead and take my ratchet and hand tighten down those bolts that we just installed. We do not want to tighten these up all of the way, as we want the receiver to be free enough that we can line up the rest of our bolts first. I am going to repeat this same procedure on the passenger side. Next we are going to install our 1/2 inch coarse thread bolts with block washers and then we will have lock nut washers on the inside. We will repeat the same step on the passenger side. On the inside of the frame well will be a large 5/8 washer, a 5/8 lock washer and nut. There will be two of these on the driver side and two identical on the passenger side. First I put my bolt through the frame, through the hitch. Then I will put on my large washer, then my lock washer. There is our first one. Let us do one more here on the driver side. Put in our bolt. Put on our large washer, large 5/8 washer, our 5/8 lock washer and then our nut. 2:16

So, now we have them on finger tight. I am going to grab a ratchet and wrench and make them hand tight. Now we are going to tighten down our bottom bolt. This is the bolt and block washer. Now that we have all of our mounting bolts hand tightened, you will want to consult the instructions for the proper torque rating and tighten each one of those down now. We will move over to the passenger side and complete the same process that is identical to the driver side. Alright, now that we have all of our mounting bolts tightened down to torque specifications, that completes our installation of Curt hitch part number, 13198, on a 2008 Toyota Tundra.
