Today we will be installing hitch part number 75607 on a 2008 Chevrolet Colorado. This hitch will also fit on the GMC Canyon as well. OK, we are underneath the vehicle now, and we are going to go ahead and point out the mounting locations for the trailer hitch. There are two large bumper bracket bolts here on the side of the frame, the exterior side of the frame, and those will provide two of the attaching points. So we will need to remove these, and we will replace them with new hardware that is provided in the installation kit. OK, with the bolts removed from both sides of the vehicle, we can go ahead and put the hitch up into position now.
You will notice that there will be a fairly large gap between the hitch and the side of the frame. We will need to put this large, 5/8 block in between the frame and the hitch itself, and that will shim up the extra space, and then we will feed through the new hardware into the threaded bolts to hold the hitch in place. So we are going to go ahead and do that now. And what you can do to help hold it up into place while you try to place the blocks in between the hitch and the frame, you can go ahead and just put one of the bolts in. Make sure that you put the conical-tooth washer onto the bolt as well. OK, with the bolts loosely installed, we can go ahead and fish the carriage bolt into the frame. Using the fish wire that is provided in the installation kit, we want to go ahead and feed the spiral part through the hole in the bottom of the frame and out through the hole in the side of the frame.
From there, we just want to feed the block under the fish wire and then thread the bolt onto the fish wire as well. And then we will just repeat that for the other side as well. And we just want to put the conical-tooth washer into place, and the nut. And again, we can leave this kind of loose for the time being, because we want to go ahead and center the hitch up next, once we get the carriage bolts in place. One thing I do want to note before we finalize pulling the carriage bolts through the frame, if the hitch tab is not sitting flush with the bottom of the frame, if it is indeed hitting the weld here on the crossmember, the installation kit does provide spacers to put into that space to fill up the gap. And you just slide those into position, and you can just use them as needed. And the easy way to check the centering of the hitch is to come where the receiver tube is you can kind of align the center of the receiver tube with the hole in the bumper where the hitch ball goes.
And once you have got the hitch centered, you can go ahead and tighten down the bolts. I would start with the one at the bottom of the frame. Tighten those first and then you can go to the ones on the side of the frame. Make sure that you tighten them evenly otherwise, they will pull the hitch one way or the other and possibly put it off-center. OK, and with bolts tightened into place, you want to go ahead and torque them down now. You want to follow the manufacturers specified torque rating for each bolt, which can be found in the instruction sheet. And with all the bolts torqued down, our installation is complete. And this concludes the installation of hitch part number 75607 on a 2008 Chevrolet Colorado.
