Chevrolet Cobalt Trailer Hitch

Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Today on this 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt we are going to install part number V58020 from Valley. The hitch is going to mount up on the frame and the bumper structure itself. On the frame there is actually a hole that is marked out from the overlapping pieces of steel, we will go ahead and use that as a mounting point. And the other two holes that go into the bumper structure, we will use the hitch as a template. :21

It will be identical on the drivers side except, we will have to lower the muffler to give us a little more working room. We will go ahead and spray down the rubber hangers with some lubricant. Pull down on it a little bit and spray it into it, and it will easily slide off. All right we will go ahead and start off with our 1/ 4 inch pilot hole and work our way up to a 1/ 2. You can go a little over a 1/ 2 inch to give you more working room for the bolt and wire pull. Once you have one side drilled out we will go ahead and repeat on the other side. :54

We are going to start fish wiring some of our hardware in here. We are gong to go ahead and use our pull wire. We are going to push it in the hole we are going to use, we are going to go down the frame to the access hole. First, we will put our block into place. It is a small metal block with a square hole, put it on the wire, thread our bolt in next, push it all in, pull it out the other side. Go ahead and repeat the same actions on the drivers side. All right we will go ahead and lift our hitch into position. Be careful not to push the bolts back in. Go ahead and put hardware into place. Conical tooth washer and a nut. What we are gong to do is snug these down, so it will hold our hitch against the bumper. Then we can use the hitch as a template to drill out our extra set of holes. The bumper material is a little bit harder than the steel in the frame, so we are going to use a rotabroach bit, it will cut through the steel a lot easier than a regular bolt will. 1:55

All right we will start installing the hardware. The black block with the round piece will go between the hitch and the bumper itself. Go ahead and fish wire like we did before, except we are going to go out towards the side of the car this time. Slide on our block, then thread in our bolt. Now I will repeat the same steps on the drivers side. Once we have all our bolts installed we will go ahead and snug them down and then we will torque the bolts down as specified in the instructions. With our hitch all torqued down we can go ahead and reinstall the exhaust next. With the exhaust reattached that will finish our install. And there you have it for part number V58020 from Valley.
