Toyota Tacoma Trailer Hitch

Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2007 Toyota Tacoma

Today we are going to be installing Valley hitch part number V82790 on a 2007 Toyota Tacoma. We are looking at the passengers side frame rail, and you can see at the end here we have got two existing weld nuts. Those are going to provide the attaching points for the trailer hitch on the frame. We are going to be using the same weld nuts on the drivers side. There are also going to be two attaching points here at the bumper. You can see at the bottom we have got three existing holes. We are going to be using the two outer holes as attaching points as well. We are actually going to be taking the part of the cover off here, the step bumper, and ping bolts down through there, where we are going to attach it to the hitch.

The first thing we are going to do is to go ahead and remove the cover from the bumper so we can our bolts down. And we also want to check our weld nuts to see if they need to be cleaned. To get the caps off the bumper cover, I am going to go ahead and remove the whole thing and then pop them out. To do that, you can see here on the underside of the bumper we have got two screws here that are holding the bumper cover on. So I am going to go ahead and remove those and then pop it off. OK, and then here on the upper side of the bumper cover we are going to remove these two little tabs and these little push pins in there. We will just pop those up as well. OK, next we want to take the 3-1/2 inch bolts with the Allen head and go ahead and those down into place. And again, those are going to provide the two attaching points on the bumper for the trailer hitch.

So next we can go ahead and put the hitch up into position. We can start by attaching it to these two bolts and then thread the bolts into the weld nuts on the bottom of the frame. I do want to note before we go ahead and put the hitch up into position that here at the bumper attaching points we are going to need to use these spacers in between the bottom of the bumper and the hitch, like so. That will help to level out the hitch at the bottom of the bumper, since the bumper itself has a slight slant to it. Then I am going to go ahead and hand tighten everything down. Then we will go back and torque them down to their specified torque rating. When tightening down the bumper bolts, the hardware kit does provide an Allen wrench so as to keep the top of the bolt from spinning. OK, now we are going to go ahead and torque the bolts down. Again, you want to check with your instructions to verify the appropriate torque rating for each individual bolt. We just want to make sure we put our step bumper cover back on and our installation will be complete. And this will conclude the installation of hitch part number V82790 on a 2007 Toyota Tacoma.

The hitch is approved for use with a weight distribution. With WD, the capacities are 600 pounds tongue weight and 6,000 pounds gross trailer weight. Make sure to check the owners manual of your Tacoma to make sure your truck is approved for a weight distribution system.
