Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2005 Subaru Legacy Wagon

Today we are going to install part number 87446 from Hidden Hitch, and we are going to install this on a 2005 Subaru Legacy Wagon. Just to show you where the hitch is going to mount up, it is going to mount up on the frame rail right here. That means is we are going to have to have access to it, so what is going to happen is the hitch is going to have to go through here between the trunk pan and the muffler. To get it up there, we are going to have to lower the exhaust to get up to it. And it is going to be identical on both sides. Before we lower the exhaust, we actually put a strap around the exhaust, just just to keep it from falling down so we do not damage anything further up the pipe, basically. Now we will go ahead and just disconnect the rubber exhaust hangers on the mufflers and lower everything down. To give us some more room, we undid this hanger going toward the front of the vehicle, too.

The next thing we need to do is uncover the bolt holes that are in the frame. They are covered up with these rubber plugs right here, so we just need to take those out. All right, before we install the hitch, we want to take a good look at this frame here. Now, some vehicles have this heat shield in the way some will not. What will happen is there will also be a bracket in the way here, and sometimes it is bolted on, so the frame is not level. In this case we have got the heat shield in the way. It does not take up that much room, but we want to get the hitch sitting as close to level as possible on the vehicle, so you may have to add a block here and on the front, too.

All right, we can go ahead at this point and start installing the hitch. We will start with the forwardmost bolts and we will hang the hitch by that, and then we will install the hardware on the rest of the hitch. All right, next we will install the hardware for our tow loop. That goes in there just like that. Then we will raise the hitch in position to help hold it up for us. And again, this is identical for both sides of the vehicle. At this point, what you want to do is go ahead and snug down all the bolts, and make sure the hitch stays level. You may have to take it back down and take out some blocks or add some blocks on the hitch. Just make sure you get the hitch level on the frame. Once you get your hitch centered and level the way you want it, then let us go ahead and tighten down the bolts to their final torque, as specified in the instructions. All right, we will go ahead and put our forward exhaust hanger back up. With the exhaust reinstalled, that finishes our install of part number 87446 from Hidden Hitch.
