Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2004 Pontiac Montana

Today we are going to be installing Curt hitch part number 13336 on a 2004 Pontiac Montana. All right, we are underneath the vehicle, and we are looking at the passengers side frame rail. You can see here at the bottom we have got three existing bolts in the frame. We are going to be removing those. And those weld nuts in the frame are going to be providing our three attaching points here at the bottom of the frame. And that will be the same on both sides of the vehicle. You can see also on the side of the frame we have got this hole just below this square slot. We are also going to be putting a bolt and block into the frame and pulling it out this way, and that will provide an attaching point on the side of the frame. And again, that will be the same on both sides of the vehicle.

Looking over here at the drivers side, again we are using the same attaching points. But you can see the two middle weld nuts do not have any bolts in them currently, and there is quite a bit of rust and corrosion built up in them. So the first thing we want to do is to go ahead and clean those out to ensure that the bolts go in easier. Once we have confirmed that, we can go ahead and remove the bolts that are in the bottom of the frame on both sides, and then we will go ahead and put our hitch up into position. Note here that the fascia support arm that we just removed the bolt from, that is actually going to stay on here.

When we put the hitch up into place, the hitch is going to go and be touching the bottom of the frame. The support bar will go underneath it. And again, that will be the same on both sides. Now that we have got all of the bolts in place here at the bottom of the frame, we are going to go to the side of the frame, where we have got this hole that is aligned with the slot in the hitch. We are going to take the fish wire that is included in the installation kit and we are going to fish it through the hole here. We are going to feed it out through the large hole here at the end of the frame. And then we will next take the carriage bolt and block that are included in the installation kit. We will first feed the block onto the fish wire, and then we will take the carriage bolt and wrap the threads of it with the fish wire. Then we will just take the end of the wire coming out of the hole that we are coming through. We are going to fasten that with the flanged hex nut that , again, is included with the installation kit.

OK, now that I have got all the bolts in place and hand tightened down, we are going to go ahead and torque the bolts down. You want to check with your directions to verify the appropriate torque rating for each individual bolt. OK, and with all of our bolts torqued down, our installation is complete. This will conclude the installation of hitch part number 13336 on a 2004 Pontiac Montana.
