Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2002 Oldsmobile Alero

Today on this 2002 Oldsmobile Alero we are going to install part number 90023 from Hidden Hitch. All right, first we will show you where the hitch mounts up on the frame. There is an existing hole here and this existing hole here. All right looking at the driver side, we are going to replace this bolt right here, that is going to be used as an attachment point. And then behind the muffler it is going to be using this as an attachment point also. So the first thing we have got to do is go ahead and lower the exhaust to get it out of our way so we can start work. We will go ahead and spray down this rubber hanger here with some lubricant. Then we should pry them off. Do the other one behind the muffler. All right, now this bolt right here we will be taking out next.

And then you have got to get this bolt out. And it has got a little catch in there so half of the time you pry it out. Or maybe from this side go ahead and take it out with a hammer because the bolt is not going to get reused anyway. The plastic always breaks. All right, next we are going to go ahead and install our hardware, but what is going to happen is the block is going to be bigger than the access hole so we have to make the access hole a little bigger. There are two ways you can do it. You can use a cold chisel and go ahead and knock the corner out. Make it just big enough to get your block into. Or you can use a small little rotary tool.

Once you are able to get your block inside, we can go ahead and pull the bolt through from the inside out. And we are going to use a bolt leader here. This does not come with the hitch kit. They are sold separately. All right we will go through the hole we are going to use and then come back out the access hole. Put our block on, put it inside, and then thread on our bolt and pull it on through. Repeat the same procedure on the passenger side two times over. Then our hitch will mount from the outside. All right at this point we will go ahead and install the hitch. We will slide the driver side over the muffler and then hold that side up while we do the passenger side and install the hardware. All right, and we will also slide the hitch over the bolt we installed earlier. Once you have all of the bolts started, you can go ahead and thread this bolt on into it. And then run it through and then you can put your nut and washer on there.

All right, we got our bolt through the hitch, now we are going to sneak on that one small washer. And then we have got to put the nut on top of that. It is kind of a tight fit so what we are going to do is just put our nut into the wrench here and we are going to put a piece of tape over it to help hold it in place while we put it up in there. And then from the back side we will use a ratchet wrench and then just thread the bolt into the nut. We will go ahead and put our conical tooth washer on this one and the nut. And the bolt towards the front of the vehicle actually needs a lock washer. All right, now that we got everything started we can go ahead and snug down all of the bolts. Now once we have got all of our bolts snugged down we can go ahead and torque them down as specified in the instructions. Now our bolts are torqued down. Now we can go ahead and put our muffler hangers back up. And then on the other side the hitch has its own muffler hanger so we will attach it to that. And with that, that finishes our install with part number 90023 from Hidden Hitch.
