Custom Fit Trailer Hitch
This Product Fits The Following Vehicles
1995 - 2004 Dodge Dakota All Models
All right, today we are going to install part number 87554 from Hidden Hitch, and we are going to install this Class III receiver hitch on a 2000 Dodge Dakota. We are going to show you where the hitch mounts up first. Basically, it is going to mount in these two existing holes in the frame, and also this bolt right here. This bolt will be taken out and replaced. However, sometimes what is going to happen is this little plate right here when you do the assembly will actually get caught between this plate for these two bolts here. So it requires you take these two bolts loose and then spin this out so you can get the bolt out. You can see on the passengers side how it looks like that. All right, you can see how the strap on this bolt is caught underneath this strap connecting these two bolts here, so that will require you to loosen these two bolts - not remove them - just loosen them enough so you can get this strap up and out of the way. All right, when you have got that bolt out, let us go ahead and tighten these back up.
All right, at this point we can go ahead and start installing our hardware. We will from the top. Now if you notice, there are two different style blocks. There is one that has the carriage bolt offset and there is one that has the carriage bolt center. The offset will go in the front. Match it to this hole so it does not hit the beam going across here. And of course our center hole block will go right back here. And repeat on both sides. As you can here, we are getting ready to install the hitch. However, there is dual exhaust in this vehicle. What you want to do is make sure that the exhaust tips and the body of the exhaust itself will pass the outside edge of the frame rails. That is a good idea to make sure when you put a hitch up there when you have got dual exhausts, make sure it goes outside the frame rails, because usually the hitch will go straight up. Hitches are not designed with aftermarket exhausts installed. In this case, we are going to have just enough room that it will fit above it, but it is going to take a lot of finesse to get it up in there.
All right, we have got the hitch temporarily hung on the frame, and now we can go install the rest of the hardware, which is going to be a flat washer, a lock washer, and the nut - do it on all four bolts. And we are just going to leave them loose, because we have still got two more bolts to install in the side of the frame and we need to move the hitch around to get them to work themselves in. All right, we have left the bolts loose because we have got the bolt hole in the hitch and we have got the bolt hole in the frame to contend with. So, when you leave it loose, you can move it around and it is a lot easier to get that bolt in there. These bolts will get installed from the outside in. And do the same thing on the other side. We have got the flat washer on the outside and the conical-tooth washer on the inside. OK, with the hardware installed, now we can go ahead and snug down the bolts that go to the bottom of the frame first, and then we will snug up the bolts in the side of the frame. All right, once you have the hardware snugged up, go ahead and torque them down to their final torque as specified in the instructions. All right, now we can torque down the bolts that are in the side of the frame. And after torquing down your bolts, that is all there is left to it. And there you have it for part number 87554 from Hidden Hitch.
