Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 1990 Ford F-150

Today on this 1990 Ford F-150 we are going to install part number 14001 from Curt. One of our first steps this involves is we have to lower our spare tire a little bit to get it out of the way. Sometimes this hanger gets in the way. What you have to do is test it. We will go ahead and put the hitch up. Clamp it into position. Mark our holes, and drill out the holes in the frame. Clamping this up into position can be a little bit of a bear so it is a good idea to have an extra set of hands involved. And you see here we have got our hitch here clamped into position. What we will do next is block our holes where it is going to be drilled. We are going to be drilling here, here, and here. We will start off with the pilot hole about a 1/ 4 inch the way up to a 1/ 2 inch. We have got our holes drilled out on the passenger side here.

We are going to repeat the same process back over on the driver side. We have got our holes drilled out. We can go ahead and start installing our hardware. Now inside the frame is going to be a block like this and then the carriage bolt is going to go right through it. We can go ahead and lift the hitch into position. Get your help again. And we will just go put it up there and we will just attach it with a couple of nuts to hold everything in place for now. In the center is this large hole here we are going to use an extra spacer. It is going to be identical back over on the driver side. And then once we get everything started we will go ahead and snug the bolts down. After you have snugged those down and got them flush against the frame, we will go ahead and torque the bolts down as specified in the instructions. All right, and with that, that finishes our install part number 14001 from Curt.
