Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2007 Mazda 3

Today on this 2007 Mazda 3 we are going to be installing Draw-Tite hitch part number 24816. Okay, we are underneath the vehicle. We are going to go ahead and point out the mounting locations for the trailer hitch. We have got multiple holes here in this bottom beam. The one just outboard of this fascia plan is one that we are going to be using. We are actually going to be enlarging this hole and this hole here. All four attaching points are going to need to be enlarged a 1/ 2 inch. And also on the inboard sides of the bumper brackets you can see we have also got two existing small holes here and depending on which model you have, 4-door or 5-door, you will need to enlarge one or the other.

This is the 5-door model so we are going to be enlarging the rear most hole here on both sides. Part number 6810. So the first step is to go ahead and enlarge all of those. It may be necessary to use a rotary broach drill bit. Start by feeding it through the bottom of the hole that we just drilled. And just feeding it all the way through to the end of the bumper here and we will take our series bolt and slide it on and wrap the thread with the bolt leader. Pull it through and down into place. We are going to do that first too with just the two with the bottom of the bumper and we will also fish through the bolts on the one side of the frame as well. All right now we have got the carriage bolts in place we can go ahead and put the hitch up into position.

Now we first need to go ahead and remove the fascia strap fasteners here. There is two of them. Okay, the hitch is actually going to go up behind that area there. And we are going to be attaching these carriage bolts with a conical tooth washer and nut. When fishing these bolts through, the opening is actually again right here at the end of the frame. And we are just going to do the same thing as we did on the other ones. We will feed the block on through the bolt leader and then wrap the threads through the carriage bolt and put those into place. And we will just add on the conical tooth washer and nut. All right, now that we have got all of the fasteners up into place we can go ahead and start torquing our bolts down. You want to check with your directions to verify the appropriate torque rating for each individual bolt. And now that we have got all of the bolts torqued down we just want to make sure we put our fasteners back into the bottom of the fascia. And that will conclude the installation of hitch part number 24816 on a 2007 Mazda 3.
