Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2006 Saturn Ion

Today on this 2006 Saturn Ion we are going to install part number 24734 from Draw-Tite. This also applies to part number 60989 from Hidden Hitch. Looking up at the passenger side of the vehicle the hitch is going to mount to the frame through this area right here. There are no existing holes for the hitch to attach to so we will end up drilling those out, using the hitch as a template. Now looking at the drivers side, the hitch will mount the same way as the passenger side, we will have to drill some holes in the frame to mount it up.

So one of our first steps is to lower the exhaust so you have more working room. You want to spray it down with some lubricant to help get it off a little easier. Okay, if we want, we can actually use a strap to pull it out of the way a little more. All right to get set up to drill our first hole, what we are going to do is actually measure from this edge here, find our center line, almost three inches. Alright we will just make sure with a ruler, back about 7/ 8ths inch. We will go ahead and mark it, and we will go ahead and drill out a pilot hole first and we will follow with a 1/ 2 inch drill bit.

Next we will go ahead and install our fish wire tool. Then we are going to install the bolt. That bolt is going to hold the hitch up so the rest of the holes can be drilled out. The hitch will act as a template. We will go all the way back to this access hole here, install our block, and then our bolt. And we will go ahead and hang our hitch from this one bolt. This is kind of an awkward part of the install so you want to have an extra set of hands to hold up one side of the hitch while install the hardware on the drivers side. And then we will find the center of the hole and mark it with a sharpie. And then we will drill out our holes. Alright we will go ahead and start threading our hardware back into the frame. On the bolt leader and out the access hole. Alright, back over to the drivers side.

Put the hitch back up, make sure you do not push the bolts back into the frame. And you will do just one side at a time. Alright, got the hitch is secured with two bolts. Now lets go ahead and finish off the other two bolts. These go on the passenger side here, then we will go back over to the drivers side. Okay we will go ahead and snug down the bolts. Lets go ahead and reattach our exhaust to the hanger. Have plenty of room there. The last thing to do is torque down the bolts as specified in the instructions. With that it finishes our install of part number 24734 from Draw-Tite.
