Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2006 Jeep Commander

Today we are going to install hitch part number 87752 on a 2006 Jeep Commander. This hitch will also fit the Jeep Grand Cherokee as well. All right, the first thing we are going to do is to go ahead and lower the spare tire and get that out of the way. Now we are under the vehicle here and we are looking at the back bumper crossmember. We want to go ahead and remove the pins going into this crossmember - this pushpin here and this pushpin here as well. That will give us room to be able to put the hitch up under and around this cross tube. A good idea before you put the hitch up into position is to go ahead and run the bolts into the hitch a couple of times to clean up the threads. It is a lot faster and easier because the frame might interfere once the hitch up into position.

Now that we have got the threads cleaned out, we are going to go ahead and put the hitch up onto the cross tube. And we want to go ahead and align the holes here with the four holes that go up and around the cross tube. With the hitch up into position we just want to run the bolts through and thread them into the other side. With the hitch up into position and the bolts tightened down, if there happens to be a gap still in between the bumper crossmember here you can put the spacer shims in there that they provided with the hitch. And with the bolts now loosely installed in the hitch we just want to go ahead and tighten them down. And then we are going to torque them down after that to 75 foot-pounds. All right, now that we have the bolts torqued down, we just want to go ahead and re-install the pushpin fasteners that we removed earlier. And with our pushpins re-installed, our installation is complete. And this will conclude our installation of hitch Part Number 87752 on a 2006 Jeep Commander.
