Review of a Yakima DoubleDown 5 Bike Rack

Today we are going to review part number Y02425 from Yakima. This is their DoubleDown Hitch Mount Bicycle Carrier. This bicycle carrier does carry five bikes. It will work on a 1-1/4 inch and a 2-inch receiver. Next, we will show you the main points about this bicycle rack. First off, it does come with a standard anti-rattle hitch bolt. This rack will fit 1-1/4 inch and 2-inch receivers. This does have a tilt feature that will help you get on the back of your vehicle while the rack is installed. The arms will fold down for clearance in storage. And also, the cradles themselves come standard with anti-sway. And the arms do carry anti-sway cradles, standard. All right, we will go ahead and install this on a typical 2-inch receiver and show you how it looks and how it works.

All right, as shown here, we have it set up for a 2-inch receiver hitch. If you want to use this in a 1-1/4 inch Class II receiver hitch, this part here, this bushing, does have to be removed to use it in the smaller receiver. What all has to be done is to take off this bolt right here. And it is a hex key bolt, and the bicycle rack does come with the proper tool to do that with. Simply unscrew the bolt and you can take off the bushing and use it in a Class II receiver hitch. In this demonstration, we are actually going to use it in a 2-inch receiver hitch, so we will go ahead and reverse the procedure and put the bushing back on, and we will go on using our Class III receiver. Just install it into the receiver until you line up the holes. And then take your anti-rattle hitch bolt, and it just threads right into it. And to tighten down the bolt, the bicycle rack does come with the proper wrench to do that with. Alternatively, you can actually go and get yourself a 3/4-inch socket and a ratchet, and that will actually speed things up, too. all right, when you have the bolt properly tightened down, go ahead and put the safety pin clip on the other side.

All right, we will go ahead and show the next feature about this bicycle rack, which is the tilt option. Basically, what you do is you pull up on this knob here and you can tilt the bicycle rack out of the way so you have easy access to the rear of your vehicle. The next feature we will show you is the arms on the bicycle rack. They actually fold down out of the way for easy storage when you are not using it. And then to put them back in the ready position for a bicycle, do the exact opposite. All right, we will go ahead and install a bike on our bicycle rack here to give you an idea of how it works. We will use the fourth one back. We will go ahead and get our straps undone first. OK, once you get your bike in place, go ahead and pull down the anti-sway part of the cradle until you get it as tight as you can get it with the frame. Once you pull your anti-sway cradle down, it actually locks the whole cradle in place so it cannot move front to rear, either. Then go ahead and take the strap for the other cradle and bring it over the top and put it in its place. And then on the other cradle do the same thing.

All right we will go ahead and show you some more details about the cradles. Again, on the anti-sway cradle, when you have it folded up like this you can actually move it front to rear rather easily. But then when you put the anti-sway cradle in position, it actually locks itself in there and makes it tight. Next, we will show you the non-anti-sway cradle. Again, it can move front to rear just by rocking it back and forth. It is just held in place by friction. Both cradles have little grooves in them to allow room for cables. And also the points - they have four different points on the cradle to attach the strap to. And the cradles themselves are lined with like a soft plastic, so there will be no rubbing on your bicycle cables or the paint job on your bike. And an additional feature about these bicycle racks is at the end of a hard ride you have these dual, in-line bottle openers to open up that cold, frosty one when you get done. All right, that covers it for part number Y02425 from Yakima, the DoubleDown 5-Bike Bicycle Rack.
