Review of Dutton-Lainson Winches DL15504

Today we're going to review part number DL15504. This is the Dutton Lainston 2-Speed Hand Winch with direct drive and the manual handbrake with an 1,800 pound weight capacity. All of the Dutton Lainston winches are built for multipurpose hauling and lifting operations. Again, this one has a weight capacity of 1,800 pounds. It is a 2-speed winch. It has a high gear and a low gear for horizontal pulling applications.

This winch does include a manual hand brake which will let you manually control the load release on your winch. It is constructed of a high carbon steel, heat-treated gears, permanently-lubricated bearings, has a reversible ratchet and the handle does have an ergonomic handle grip for convenient and easy cranking of the winch. This handle is also a quick-attach handle which has a lever. If you just push in on it you can pull the handle right off. Just push that in and it will allow you to switch gears.

Slide it on. Locks it into place. Allows you to change from the high speed to a low gear, requiring less effort. Now this winch does have a zinc tough plate finish, which is a finish that has 3 times the corrosion resistance of your standard zinc-plated finish. The handle is included.

It does come with a 5 year limited warranty. The part is made in the USA. And we did mention, this is a 2-speed winch. Basically has a high gear and a low gear, so what happens is they do have two different gear ratios. The high gear would be a 5.4:1 gear ratio.

So if we go ahead and put the handle onto the high gear what that gear ratio means is to rotate this drum one complete revolution it would take 5.4 revolutions of the handle to complete that one revolution of the drum. Now if we move it to the lower gear, which is this one up here, this one will have a gear ratio of 10.3:1. And basically what that would mean is to rotate that drum one revolution it would take 10.3 revolutions of the handle to do that. This does have a handle length of 9 1/2 inches. It has a reversible ratchet right here which, when you push it all the way up, it will allow the drum to go in any direction. And when it's down it engages the gears. The maximum drum capacity for a cable on this would be 58 feet by 9/32 diameter cable. The maximum capacity for strap would be 38 feet long by 2 inch wide strap. And just to show you operation of this, this manual hand brake basically what would happen is that this is in the freewheel mode where this would turn automatically, you can use this hand brake. If you push down on it it would lock the drum. And if you just leave up on it it will allow the drum to turn. If you push down. So it's a good way of controlling the load that you will be winching. It also has the 2-speed ratchet which I was showing you up here. Basically, with it all the way up it rotates freely. We put a handle on, we push it all the way down that will engage it into the gears and that will allow you to, with it down, the low gear would crank counter-clockwise. And if we switch it to the higher gear that would crank clockwise. And that should do it for a review on part number 15504.
