Custom Fit Brake Controllers
Today we are going to install part number 90185, and we are going to install this brake controller from Tekonsha on a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado. This is where our wiring harness is it is tucked up behind the ventilation port. It is behind some wires. It is taped up, and you can see the blue and the orange wires. They are kind of on the heavy side, so it is a good indicator of which harness it is. We have got a label here that shows you which wire does what. But we will go ahead and cover them here. The white is going to be our ground wire. This blue, light blue wire with the white tracer is going to be our brake feed off the brake switch. The red wire with the black tracer is going to be our 12-volt power supply. And the blue is going to be our power output from the brake controller going out to the back of the truck. And this orange wire here is not used at all. Let us go ahead and connect our wires up per function.
So, we will start with the power, which is going to be black on our brake controller, and is going to be our red with the black stripe. And we will do our brake output, which is going to be blue to blue. Then we do our brake switch feed, which is going to be red to our light blue with white tracer. And we will finally hook up our ground, which is going to be white to white. And then we will tape up our harness and make it nice and neat. We will go ahead and install our brake controller now. There is a nice little spot underneath the dash here, a flat spot, and we will actually mount our bracket to that. All right, we have got our bracket installed. Now we can go ahead and install our brake controller. OK, with our bracket installed, go ahead and snap the cord into the back of the brake controller and then we will bolt it in place.
Next what we will do is go ahead take our excess cord, our length of cord, and go ahead and just tie it off underneath the dash. Our brake controller is installed now. Now we still have to get power to this. So we have to go underneath the hood and make some connections there. OK, our next connection is going to be taking this red wire here with the loop, and that is going to attach to a post in the power distribution box. And here you can see it is labeled aftermarket trailer power - that will go to our brake controller. Right here is the post we will hook up to. Simply unlock this handle here and get that out of our way. Now it does not come with a nut, so you have to supply that on your own. And what that is going to be is a 10-millimeter by 1.25 thread pitch. OK, tighten it down, and go ahead and put our handle back in place, and then we will check our power on the brake controller.
All right, as you can see here, we have got two dots on display, so that is telling us it is getting power. All we have got to do now is just test it with a trailer or electrical tester. Im sorry, just test it with a trailer or a light tester. And when you hook up our tester, it shows C for connected, so that means it is working, it is getting power. And then what you can do is go ahead and hit the manual override and you are good to go. We will have to reinstall the cover on the power distribution box and then we will be finished. And there you have it for part number 90185 from Tekonsha, the Prodigy Brake Controller, on our 2009 Silverado pickup.
