Installation of a Brake Controller on a 2003 Dodge Dakota
Today we are going to be installing the Prodigy, part number 90185, along with the Prodigy Wiring Harness 3020-P, on a 2003 Dodge Dakota with a factory 7-pole plug. All right, we are going to go ahead and take a look at the rear of the vehicle here and show you what the factory plug actually looks like, because on the Dakota they are fairly rare. As you can see, this vehicle came with a factory hitch as well as the factory connector. And if you come in close, on the front of the plug itself it is actually stamped Chrysler. And the harness itself is all factory it runs directly to the front. So that is a way to tell if it is a factory 7-pole that you have or if it is one that was put on aftermarket.
All right, we are inside the cab now, and we are going to go ahead and locate the port for the brake control wiring harness. As you can see, we are looking actually left of the brake pedal. This white connection point - the plug is actually sitting directly on top of it. And it is a blue plug with four pins inside of it. It is pretty hard to see, but it is there, and that is what we are going to plug the 3020-P into, and then that will get plugged directly into our Prodigy. We want to just find a good routing point up above the brake pedal to where we have the plug coming out right over here. All right, and now we are going to go ahead and mount our bracket for the brake controller. OK, included in the installation kit of the Prodigy, there are two brackets available for installation. We have got the quick pocket here, which is a little bit larger, but it allows you to just set the Prodigy in and then remove it real easy, if you do not want to leave it mounted all the time.
And we have got the more stable bracket here, which you mount directly, and you will put two screws in the side of the Prodigy. So it is less bulky, but it is more permanent of an attachment. Whichever bracket you want to use, you definitely want to make sure that when you mount it you want the bracket to be in a straight line with the braking of the vehicle. We do not want it to be turned one way or the other, or the Prodigy will not work effectively. So, once you have found the spot you want to have it located, go ahead and drill your holes for the mounting bracket. And when you do - I am just drilling some pilot holes here, and then I am going to put my mounting hardware in. You definitely want to make sure you check behind the area where you are going to be drilling to make sure there are not any electrical components behind it that you could drill into. And I am just going to use the Phillips-headed screws that are provided with the Prodigy to mount my bracket.
OK, now we can go ahead and attach the Prodigy to the mounting bracket. And again, the screws for this are also available in the hardware kit that comes with the Prodigy. And then, with the Prodigy mounted, we can go ahead and plug our wiring harness into the back of it. As you can see, it instantly flashes the NC on the controller, which stands for Not Connected, which is telling you that you do not have a trailer connected to the controller. And it will do the same thing when you use your slide bar. And again, the two dots also indicate that there is no connection to a trailer. Once you connect to the trailer, you will get a flashing C, telling you it is connected. And the brake controller will go down to one dot on the face plate. OK, the only thing left to do is to, if you have got any extra, loose wires like I have got here, I am going to go ahead and fasten those up out of the way. But other than that, our installation is complete. And that will conclude the installation of Prodigy part number 90185 and Prodigy Wiring Harness 3020-P on a 2003 Dodge Dakota.
