Question:
I read when you install a trailer brake on a 2009 Ford F-150,will I need to take the truck to a dealer and have it programed into the vehicles computer operating system for it to work properly, is this true?

If you have a factory installed brake controller on your 2009 Ford F-150 and you wish to replace it you will have to go the the dealer and have the PCM (powertrain control module) flashed so that the fault code that will appear, when the factory brake controller is removed, will not be displayed on the instrument panel, in the dash. If the PCM is not flashed the vehicle will be searching for the factory installed brake controller and will not be able to find it so the fault code will appear. If your vehicle does not have a factory installed brake controller, you will not need to have anything done at the dealer to install a brake controller on your vehicle. You can use the Brake Controller Wiring Adapter for Ford F-150, item # 20272, to install a brake controller, or use the hitch hunter on our site, put in your vehicle year make and model, select show all categories and then brake controllers and you can order the brake controller with the harness required for your truck. I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy Proportional Brake Controller with Ford F-150 Adapter, item # 90185-22292, for your truck. This is our best selling brake controller and is proportional so the braking intensity depends on how fast the truck is stopping and prevents excessive wear on the trailer and vehicle brakes.
