Question:
I have a nissan frontier 4x2 that has a 6300lb towing capacity. I want to tow a travel trailer with my truck. What should be the maximum weight of trailer that I can safely tow. I expect that I should never have more than 500lbs of gear to take as well. Thank you in advance.

Expert Reply:
When it comes to towing a trailer, the vehicle tow rating is always the final word. In your case, the weight of the trailer and all gear stored in it cannot exceed the vehicle tow rating, which is 6300 pounds. If the rating of the hitch has a lower weight capacity than the vehicle tow rating, a weight distribution system can be used to gain extra hitch capacity. However, this capacity will still be limited by the tow rating of the vehicle.
