Longer Ball Mount Needed so Trailer Jack Handle Will Clear Spare Tire on 1991 Isuzu Rodeo

Question:

I just bought a class 3 receiver from etrailer.com. My tow vehicle is a 1991 Isuzu Rodeo with the spare tire factory mounted to the back door. My trailer has a jack handle that wont clear the tire when I raise it or lower it. The ball-mount receiver shaft should a little longer to clear the tire. Can you advise how long the horizontal shaft should be.

Expert Reply:

You will have to make some measurements to determine how much clearance will be needed. Measure from the hitch pin hole in your hitch out past the spare tire. The standard ballmount length (the measurement between the hitch pin hole and the hole for the trailer ball) is between 8 and 10 inches, but longer shanks are offered all the way up to 16 inches.
