Is Brake Controller Install Kit, Part ETBC7 Needed to Install Brake Controller on 1998 Suburban?

Question:

I have a 1998 Chevy Suburban 1500. I want to know if this vehicle has to use the full brake controller wire kit that includes the breakers and direct run to the battery, or if this year and model you could connect to the wiring block/loom for the brake controller and 7pin connector? Thanks.

Expert Reply:

On your model year, in some instances GM ran a orange and blue wire from under the brake master cylinder to the rear of the vehicle, along the drivers side frame rail. If this wiring is in place, all of the rest of the connections must be wired into the vehicle. I usually recommend using the Brake Controller Installation Kit anyway. The kit includes the trailer connector, circuit breakers, hardware and wire. You most likely will not need all of the wire in the kit, but as a matter of convenience the install kit would be your best bet.
